With the NCAA Track & Field championships just ended, it's time to remember Aztec great Willie Steele. Although his team -- Aztec men's track & field -- no longer exists, his records and accomplishments live on. Willie won the the 1947 NCAA long jump (called the broad jump then) with a leap of 26'6". How good was that? It was 2.25" short of Jesse Owens' world record at the time. But that's not all: 26'6" (8.08 meters) would have gotten Willie 2nd place in the 2010 men's championships! (and he would have won in 2008) Willie won the gold medal in the long jump in the 1948 Olympics, and is a charter member of the Aztec Hall of Fame. He passed away in 1989. A great Aztec! Attachments:

Someone should post a historical story once a week to give props to the AZTECS of yesteryears
