Borg my man, what's the news up there regarding Utah? What do people think about BYU and Utah being in different conferences? It's as varied as there are people. So I can only speak for myself. * I don't want BYU and Utah being in separate conferences. It is way too much fun having them as the last game, with potentially everything on the line. I don't know how Texas & aTm have done it...but I would hope that BYU & Utah would always be a package deal. But I don't know if that is the case. * If I was Utah at this time, I'd be a little put off. The Pac10 has strung them along, dangling a 'potential invite' to Utah...and then proceeded to court any and all other potential current BCS team in the land to join....and leaving Utah as a "last resort" type school most likely thinking "we can always get Utah" so let's see if we can get _______ university first." That's the feeling I get anyway. So, the news of Utah going to the PAC, was HOT, then cold, now it was heating back up again, and now the rumor that KU is ahead of Utah, so it cooling again. Who is to really know. I personally just want these two universities in the same conference.

I agree with Borg. Having lived in SLC the last ten years I've seen the passion in the rivalry between these two schools, including with friends I have on both sides of the rivalry. Frankly, right now, I see BYU and Utah as big fish in a little, but dynamic pond. As I don't envision a scenerio where both schools would end up in the same BCS conference, the question would be which defines you: tradition, or money? Would they get eaten up in their new "now, kinda wow" BCS conferences, (kinda like an identy crisis for each school), for the big bucks?
Kinda makes me uncomfortable with the direction college football appears to be going.

I think Utah stays in the MWC. When this whole thing started, a move with Colorado to the Pac 10 made sense but now that the Big 12 has imploaded, the MWC will get stronger and Utah can be the King of the MWC (with BYU as ....nevermind I won't go there) instead of being #16 in the Pac 10.
I really think it would be a mistake for the Utes to leave what could potentially be the #3 basketball conference in the land - better than the Pac 10, SEC and Big 10.
Nebraska only brings down the Big 10, the SEC isn't that great outside of Kentucky and the Pac 10 was worse that us this year and add only Texas as a solid BBall Program. We could add Kansas, Missouri, K-State, Baylor to UNLV, New Mexico, SDSU, BYU & Utah.

I agree with Borg's sentiment that Utah is basically being used as a last choice just to get to an even number of teams. If, at the end of all this, Utah is not offered an invitation to the Pac-15, there will be some burnt bridges in SLC.

I wonder if most Utah fans would prefer the MWC with BYU or Pac? I know SDSU fans would be quick to jump on a PAC bandwagon.

"I know SDSU fans would be quick to jump on a PAC bandwagon."
This is true, but it is also very logical from a geographic standpoint (at least before the added Colorado and likey Texas & Oklahoma teams). So what if A&M, Kansas & Utah all turned down the Pac 15...would they stick to 15 before even considering SDSU?

What would the odds be of the Utah legislature jumping in and preventing the Utes from jumping ship? The Utes are a public institution, and they are in a state where a huge majority of mormon's (rooting for BYU) wouldn't want the Utes to leave their conference.

At this point SDSU wouldn't even be missed by the MWC if we left. Utah will be missed. They are the yang to BYU's yin. "I know SDSU fans would be quick to jump on a PAC bandwagon." Well, as of this morning (6/14) Utah is "back in" the picture of the Pac-12.
Apparently, Texas has agreed to stay with the Big 12 (with only 10 members) and is looking to stabilize that conference with 10 members.
Apparently, Larry Scott was back in Salt Lake this weekend, speaking with Utah's President etc.
In the past, I think there was an understanding between the two universities of BYU and Utah, where one would not do something without the other. I don't have any confidence that exists any more. (Of course, that was in the days when BYU was riding high and Utah...not so much).
Now that Utah has made a name for themselves...who knows. I get the feeling that everyone is out for themselves. I would love it if Utah told the Pac-10 "Hey, we're doing ok, thanks for the thought. But, we've got a better route to a BCS bowl game, and we have a better basketball league than you already".
...not holding out much hope for that though.

Its funny how there are both reports that the Big 12 is going to stay together and that it NOT going to stay together from this morning. I haven't see the 'stay together report from today - 6/14) but ESPN is saying that "The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday. " So I am going to go with that.

Borg,
You all need to circle the wagons up there and give Yootah the finger when it comes to scheduling the rivalry game. Replace them with your next biggest conference rival. Who would that be? SDSU?
All in all probably adds fuel to the rivalry and doubt it ever gets dropped. At least move it up to Week 1 like CSU-CU though. You've got your pride, don't you? ;D

It's hard to say who will be the next "rival"...I don't think that the rivalry will be replaced per say with Utah...but, we seem to bring out the best in most programs...

The Borg: Have been looking for you. I am still astounded that Utah would leave the rivalry and the conference. As the parent of a Utah grad in the past decade my take on SLC and environs is that it is such as "closed" environment that it would not seriously consider such a huge change. I was wrong. Oh,the money. That was it and is. I will miss the Utes, a fine university with very good football and basketball that BSU cannot match. I have a golf friend who was a professor at SDSU who even last week assured me that Utah and BYU were joined at the hip. Shows you what he knew.

Shows you what he knew about Utah.
