I talked to a source today in the know. (No, I can't divulge the source)
I will say it is one of the best sources without talking to Brian Carlwell him self.
This is Brian Carlwells 5th year. He is graduating on time in 5 years.
Applying for a medical redshirt year (which would possibly bring Brian back for one more year in uniform) has been discussed and here is where it is.
It is all in Brians hands. If Brian Carlwell wants to come back and play another year, he is able to apply for a medical redshirt year (based on what happened in Illinois).
The staff is open to it. It is Brians decision and no decision has been made at this time.
Since he is graduating, he may want to move on in life. Maybe not.
My contact does not know what way Brian is leaning and there is no guarantee of if he will be granted the 6th year if he applies.
So the way I read it at this time is...
-The rumors that he won't be back are not totally true.
-The rumors that he won't be granted a 6th year for sure are not true.
-The decision to apply is in his hands.
I hope he does and gets that 6th year. I can see him starting at center next year on a very, very, good Aztec team.

That would be great!
I love Brian's spirited play on and off the court.

Brian is VERY popular with the fans. Appears to be having a blast at SDSU and has gone through the program in an era where it has achieved tremendous success. Individually, he has likely under achieved but could really flourish next year with experience and reliance on him as a starter.
I feel good about our guards next year and truly believe that a true center like him turns next year's squad into a 20 game winner.

I have always been told that the issue had always been Illinois not really giving Brian the medical back up materials needed....That has been a while since an insider told us that though....I might have to snoop a little tomorrow.

He is one of my fav players...not the best player, but one of my favs! Would love to have him back, and think he would greatly help this team! If we could keep him and Kawhli we'd be a Top 15 team!

In order to play based on the info above he would have to go to graduate school...that may be another factor (just like Shelton will next season - as seen in the Jim Rome video)

In order to play based on the info above he would have to go to graduate school...that may be another factor (just like Shelton will next season - as seen in the Jim Rome video) Shelton and Carlwell are different situations entirely. Tim' medical redshirt will put him in the 5-years-to-play-4 timeframe; Brian's is for a 6th year, which we are told is next to impossible to get, but have had pretty good luck getting them in the past (Kelvin Davis last year, and a few football players, although we were unsuccessful with Attiyyah Henderson).

he is a great guy that has really shown the players who do not start what it means to be a positive part of this team, hugs each starter as they go on the court and really gets into the crowd. Another year with the conditioning coach could really help him be a help next year in the middle. When the student section yells 'feed the beast" is it for BC- our good sized teddy bear

When the student section yells 'feed the beast" is it for BC- our good sized teddy bear He's already our vocal team leader and appears to provide a chemistry that every team needs. The fact that he would likely start and play 20-25 per game also giving us a needed dimension inside would be great to have back. I'm assuming he's having a ton of fun playing this year and I think he would want to do it again if he could ... can he qualify for a 6th year remains the question?
