Best winning record in Charger history. Tied for the best playoff record in Charger history. (I put Bobby Ross in front of him because of the aforementioned Super Bowl appearance, though as you may recall, they barely appeared in that game.) Full support of the GM. A desire not to see him as OC for another team (maybe under whomever Denver hires). Last years extension. And the ease of explaining this years schedule on a rash of bad luck, injuries, etc. (I'm not saying its a valid reason, just that it is easy to use as an excuse to make the decision not to fire if you don't want to fire him). These are the reasons Norv will be back. Gosh, I wish you were wrong, but, unfortunately for some of us, you're not.

That win on the road in Pittsburgh was very impressive.

Pitt woulda gotta just as smacked, as would any other team in the NFL that year coached by anyone. That 9er team was one of the best ever. Unfort, in the 3 "Big Dances" that SD teams have played in, they've played arguably some of the best teams ever in the sport ('84 Tigers, '98 Yankees). Will SD ever have one of those teams???

My point is mostly that if you want Norv to stay, there is plenty of ammunition. AJ clearly wants Norv to stay. Best winning record in Charger history. I know a lot of people bag on AJ as well. Saying he is not a good GM. A lot of the same people (I promise I'm not calling anyone out) bag on Norv for failing with such a talented roster. It bugs me that people try to have this both ways.
Again, I'm not criticizing anyone on this board (honestly, I barely look at who is the author of posts), I just hate when people use these kind of logical fallacies in their arguments.
(And for the record, I'm pulling for Norv mostly because if he succeeds, it means that the Chargers have succeeded, but partly because I love when guys who take tons of criticism come out on top. Doesn't make sense really but I just love seeing people proved wrong. But really, if they replaced him, I'd probably get on board with whoever they brought in).

But does anyone why he wasn't around much after that? I know he went to Detroit and then quit there before heading to Army. He is now retired, but why did he end up in Detroit of all places and never coach anywhere else in the NFL?

Norv has done better in his time as HC than I thought he would, probably because he's really just an offensive coordinator in terms of responsibility.
While a good HC would probably do better with this group, the real problem is a lack of depth. A special teams coach doesn't just forget how to coach one year. When a team suddenly becomes unable to block or tackle on ST, it's a pretty good sign that bad times are ahead. There are a few really great players on the Chargers, but the players around them are getting worse every year. I think Norv and AJ are both gone next after next year.

The Chargers have had one of their most successful runs in their history. If they win Sunday, that's 6 winning seasons in 7 years, something that hasn't happened since the 1960's when the team had winning records 9 of 10 years. People forget how bad it was from 1997-2003.
Spanos trusts AJ for good reason. He's put together pretty solid teams as GM. While I would like Turner gone and a better head coach brought in, I don't concur with getting rid of the GM.
