Cease is a proven starter, he will do well in pitcher friendly Petco Park. He will do well here. Still a steep price to pay for two years of him though.

Cease reminds me of Snell in some respects: Walks a lot of hitters--strikes out a lot of hitters. Lucky if he makes it into the 6th inning. Throws hard. His WHIP is just a touch higher than Snell. Many other stats are fairly equal. Really need to see a bounce-back year form Cease--can Niebla work his magic?
3 pitchers (2 prospects) and a minor league OF for Cease, and Cease is only getting $8 mil for '24. It's good for the Padres payroll.
Sure would like at least one more outfielder.

Entire rotation is locked up for at least two years now. Still have depth behind those guys with Waldron, Vasquez and a host of others. Lesko and Snelling give you a serious boost for 2025.
Team is still working to add a corner outfielder.

I think it's better to let the guys who are mashing in spring training get at bats for now, rather then go get a guy. We have 5 good outfield bats right now.

There's one, a rookie and a black hole.

I guess the story is, "he was available, and they could get him on the staff before the season" (if barely). Still, with such glaring holes elsewhere, one has to wonder what the discussions are like inside Petco Park when it comes to justifying this to themselves...

Target good players.

Azocar .900 spring training OPS, has played like a 4th or 5th outfielder in the regular season before now Mercado 1.073 spring training OPS, has played like a 4th or 5th outfielder in the regular season before now Locastro 1.115 spring training OPS, has played like a 4th or 5th outfielder in the regular season before now Why not give Azocar, Mercado more run before getting someone? If Locastro continues to hit well in AAA, call him up. Pauley even could play left field. Getting another outfielder is taking away opportunity from Azocar and Mercado, when they are actually doing well at the plate. Better to give them opportunity.

Contending teams aren't giving everyday AB's to minor league journeymen. Profar was signed for a million dollars and was the worst qualified hitter in baseball last season. The Padres are projected to have the worst left field production of any team in baseball. Stop putting emphasis into spring training stats. They largely mean nothing, the sample size is miniscule and there's very little correlation - Azocar isn't going to suddenly slug .600 outside of Peoria after having no power his entire career. They need an everyday guy there to boost production, the offense is a bat light from being a top five team in the NL. They didn't trade for Cease to do nothing else.

Then what's the point of calling it an "open competition" for positions in left field and center field? Because you're trying to build a competitive culture and nobody has won a spot yet. That doesn't mean you're not looking for actual upgrades at the position when you're projected to be the worst at it. Pretty simple. You want guys like Azocar and Mercado to be depth pieces, not everyday players. Get a corner outfielder, take some of the pressure off Merrill and upgrade the offense.

They'll cut a position player and probably four pitchers. They carried four outfielders, you don't really need more than that for two games.

Can they move guys from the taxi squad to the active 26-man roster for game 2 if they choose to do so? Or are the moves only allowed due to injury?

I believe it's only in case of injury, but not totally clear.

Looked it up...
The White Sox had the worst rated defense in baseball last year. Legitimately awful across the board in OAA, DRS, UZR, you name it.
Padres were #7.

He got himself out of a jam with only two runs scored, and saved an Cronenworth from an error. Not bad.
