Merrill got hits off of a good pitcher (Gilbert), a borderline MLB pitcher (Voth), and a guy who will probably be in minor league camp soon (Stoudt). Yay? How about an opposite field home run off a top five pitcher in baseball last year? Gallen's 2nd start this spring--not effective in either appearance. Get back to me when the season starts.

And I thought I was negative... We can argue if he's ready or not, but the point is he's going to put the ball in play a ton and is one of the more exciting rookies the Padres have had in years. The skillset is legit, the data backs it up.

Leo De Vries is in his first game, playing shortstop. Naturally, the first ball of the inning was hit to him.

Social media is ablaze with Dylan Cease talk, thanks to a Ken Rosenthal two sentence blurb... A change of leagues along with pitcher friendly Petco Park might be good for Cease. The Padres rotation could use some experience and depth.

The Padres rotation could use some experience and depth. The cost will be high and the offense still needs considerably more help than the pitching.

Deal with Pham is moving closer, something in the neighborhood of $3-4M.

Deal with Pham is moving closer, something in the neighborhood of $3-4M. At least 3-4M is a lot more reasonable then the initial 8-10M that it was thought that he would command on the open market. Still don't like him, but oh well. That leaves plenty of salary cap room to make a trade deadline deal as well.

It's probably a full win upgrade from Profar, if not more. Pham was very good last season offensively and he'll help at DH.

Do you think that organizations are less likely to pay for veteran outfielders then they were before due to the increase in steals? (ie. a young gun prospect has more value then they did before the pickoff rules/bases were changed, because they can rack up more steals, whereas a 36 yr old can't take as much advantage of that side of the game)?

Pham stole 22 bases last season. No, I think the answer is much more simple. It's just greed.

Yeah, as soon as the price dropped to a more realistic number, the more interest there is.
