his troubles began almost immediately after MLB moved to ban substances. but sure I will humor you, and say maybe your right. what then is wrong with Mr Snell? They did not - He was a fringe top 10 pitcher in baseball in August and September last season after the ban was enacted. The problem is the same it has always been - He's inefficient in the strike zone and doesn't attack hitters ahead in counts. He doesn't sequence well, doesn't mix quadrants of the plate with his fastball and is plagued by foul balls, inflating his pitch count. He'll get to 0-2 and then try to expand the zone, but good and disciplined teams will not chase the fastball up and out of the zone because it's never a strike at any point. well then, he had best stop throwing his 4-seamer more than 50 percent of the time if this is accurate. maybe i'm not reading this hard enough, but it seems to be his secondary pitches don't hit the zone enough so batters sit on his fastball. baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/blake-snell-605483?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb&playerType=pitcher

He needs to just develop a tougher mentality in attacking hitters and trusting his stuff. The stuff itself is elite.

Another loss for Snellzilla. Not making much hay this season. Winless in 2022.
First, third, and fourth innings today were well pitched. The other two, not so much. 4 BBs. Not good.

Four great innings, then fell apart as is becoming the norm for him. Broke Harper's thumb before that…

Yep, rolling along and then, snap, he loses it. Gotta be frustrating… can't stay focused or what?? Weird. Yeah, I don't know. It seems like around the fifth inning he loses it. I know by the fifth inning it's typically the second go around for the batters, but he also seems to also lose almost complete command around that time. He was pitching ahead of the hitters through the fourth, and then all of a sudden he loses it and is pitching behind just about every batter. Frustrating.

He was on it for four innings. Really on it tonight. Not dicking around between pitches, getting strike one on almost every batter with the first pitch. The HBP (Harper) and the HR at this start of the next inning just set him off somehow. Of course, the Phillies hitters started sitting on that.

6 more walks in 3.2 innings today. Let's face it, this kid's got issues (along with many other Padres, sigh).

Heard something on 1360 today regarding Snell, calling him the Brady Anderson of pitchers.

He looks great one inning and then throws 37 pitches the next. He's a total head case. You'd never be able to trust him in a playoff series. Pay Musgrove for GOD'S SAKE!!!!!!!!!

He may still throw some elite pitches, but he's no longer an elite pitcher. Whether it's head case or mechanical failure, his season so far has been a dismal mess. Today he could only get a fastball over for a strike 50% of the time. Strike one only happened on the first pitch 11 times for 21 batters. Falling behind hitters over and over, and walking 6 batters in less than four innings is symptomatic of someone who couldn't find the plate to save his soul. Why that is still happening at this point in the season would be a good question for him - and the team - to contemplate. He stunk it up. Again. That smell today was Snell (among others).

The Snell conundrum continues with his outing today being a very decent performance - he wasn't economical with pitches and let a few on base but did enough to leave them on base. His velocity was up, and he was hitting his targets pretty regularly.
You never know exactly which Snell will show up on the mound on any given start. Hopefully part two of the season shows us this one more often than not.

Get him a win.

It must be hard though to know you have to hold teams to 0 or 1 run if you expect to win a game.
