$9 million??? Just watched him flailing away (again) at the plate during an AB against the Giants. If he does manage to hit the ball hard, he hits it right at someone.
Currently not even hitting his weight. (0.188), and now it's May. There's gotta be a better choice for backup fielder "down on the farm". They've gotta be looking at some options if he can't get straight at the plate - and not just for this season, since he's only got a 1-year contract.
With Myers ailing, and who knows if that's going to be a chronic condition this season, the Padres look like they might need a little extra help in the OF right now.

They still do. One hit does not a season make😲

A bigger concern than Pham is the offense in its entirety, which doesn't crack the top 15, in large part to a lack of bench production (Mateo shouldn't be on the roster) and the myriad of injuries to the bullpen. Pham's salary is 8.9 million through arbitration. It's not like that's an exorbitant amount of money for a single year.

Mateo has zero feel for hitting at the MLB level. He's around because of his speed and versatility on defense. The Padres are getting next to nothing from the bench, which really puts an emphasis on some struggling starters right now.

Padres OPS leaders last 15 days:
1. Tatis 1.126 2. Pham .818 3. Grisham. .794
Over the past 7 days (limited ABs): 1. Pham. 1.056 2. Mateo 1.000 3. Grisham. 979 4. Profar. .945
It's way too early to give up on Mateo or our bench overall. Kim also hasn't been terrible, although would like to see him get more regular ABs (i.e. 1+ starts a week). When Nola gets his timing our bench could be relatively solid. Not power filled, but guys who can contribute in very different ways.

He brings speed to the table and every squirrel finds a nut, but he needs more at bats in AAA at some point. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he all of a sudden gets it, and starts looking like a different hitter.

Except you can't steal first--unless, of course, Manfred comes up with another new rule saying you can.

Ryan reminded me of the fact that Mateo is out of options, so that pretty much means Mateo gets traded, or released.

He needs AAA bats with whoever he's traded to, or if he gets picked up by someone if we release him.
