Our recruiting has been damn good before all this, so little reason to think it'll change. We'll get a mix of transfers & FR, but I do think Dutch is going to limit his HS recruits more so than in the past. No seasons with 5 FR like last year.
Gonzaga is successful now more so due to their HS (& International) recruiting & becoming less reliable on transfers. They had a mass exodus after last season so they had to grab 2, but most of their team are high level recruits. Multiple top 100 nationally. That's definitely the case moving into next year, given their class is ranked 7th nationally & they have a top 10 recruit (& potential 1 & done) coming in, along with other top 100 kids. They've moved from being a high-major/get rebound recruits to blue blood status winning head to head battles for top 50 kids.

I know a lot has to do with how well and far we go in the NCAA tournament, but for you guys who follow this a lot closer than I do, what do you think the effect of this magical season will have on getting top recruits? Will it open some doors or will the conference hold us back? I would love to see us turn this season into the makings of a perennial powerhouse. We've been consistently good.. now how about GREAT? Don't know for sure, but you can bet with all the publicity it can only help! So, all I can say is keep winning Aztecs!!!!!!!

Really are going to need to be able to get a quality grad transfer for the 4/5 position for the 2020-21 season or possibly a JC guy - to make sure we keep winning . Yanni will be gone and he has been very important .
We do not know how good Nathan , AG or Keashan will be or their health at the 5 and 4 positions - Joel M still has a lot to learn
Also does Malachi return or go to NBA - we do have two Freshmen HS guards coming in but that means inexperienced - also Che as a SG - coming off an injury
so that could mean a drop off
So important to get the grad transfer at the 5/4 position
Could not be a better opportunity to get a player - but is still difficult to out recruit the very high level P6 schools
Sure hope - we can keep Dutcher AND Acker and they can recruit the guy or guys we need to continue the high quality of play .
In addition to being a top player the guy must also want to be a team player - does take adjustment

It has more to do with the coaching staff than the record.
The current record is a reflection about the quality of coaching.
As long as dutcher and his staff is at SDSU, we will be fine.

Gonzaga has worked successfully with "one and dones" for years. The difference? Like SDSU, their one year players were grad transfers or seniors. In other words, why recruit a troublesome 5* high school kid for one year when you can get a mature focused 22 year old. I think the rest of college basketball is now awake on this and with loosening of transfer rules the recruiting will become more competitive. Also, the number of NCAA investigations following the recruitment of these high school players is substantial. Gonzaga wants one and dones don’t kid yourself. Jalen Suggs who commited to Gonzaga not so long ago is 99% likely to be a one and done.

I just can't get excited about a team full of "one and dones". Do they even go to class, are they really students ? I can see having one maybe two max on your team but personally I like rooting for players over the course of their college career. I am also proud of the fact that so many of our players graduate and get a degree.
By the way how do schools like Kentucky, Duke etc.have so many "one and done" and still meet the graduation requirements ?

Recruits want playtime, exposure and a coach that can prepare them for the next level.
SDSU has all 3. Winning only helps. Better players want to play for the national championship. It’s proving possible if you go to SDSU. I mean, UNLV is still living off the are el teams from 30 years ago.

Just think about what all the transfer portal guys are thinking. They all see everybody going nuts over the one hit wonders (freshmen) and then giving up on them when they fail to produce their first year. San Diego State is doing this with a mixture of ALL classes, with strong leadership from not only coaches but also the players themselves along with a strong student fan base (thanks to the "Show" again) San Diego State is now producing at the highest level in Basketball and to a certain degree Football. The rest of other sports are pretty competitive across the board (with a few exceptions). They are also expanding the campus, enlarging the enrollment, building a new stadium, increasing academic standards and prestige...... San Diego State University is on a path in both academic and athletics that they have never been on before. This is going to be a wild ride the next few years if they continue on the same trajectory. All I can say is "sit down and hold on, this could be a wild ride" Go Aztecs!

Bottom line Dutcher and the staff are going to need to get a high quality guy to replace Yanni for the 2020-21 team
In addition the coaches thoughts on can the freshmen coming in replace Malachi or Matt if they go pro
Also our AD is going to need financial support to keep both Dutcher and Acker - (better start talking with the JAM group or Alums with money )

He is not on any mock draft lists and isn't going to have his degree (which is still important if you ever want to get into coaching). Flynn is possible but he isn't going in the first round. I don't think Dutch would go anywhere and we have already heard that his contract will be addressed after the season. But you do have a point about Acker and assistants. I have no problem with coaches leaving for a higher position - for Acker that would be a HC job somewhere. But a lateral move to a P5 school would be hard to swallow. As an alumn I wouldn't mind donating to pay our assistants better.

If not, and the need is there, I am confident Dutch will fill the need. I don't necessarily think there is a bottom line to replacing Yanni. Remember, we have a couple of guys who are getting some valuable experience at guard this year who will be back next year. And from what I understand, Butler is a true PG/facilitator that plays defense at a high level. Dinwiddie can fill it up, and if Matt goes (I highly doubt that happening), Che Evans will go a long way to filling that need. I also look for Keshad to make strides in the off season and have a much more refined game to go with that off the charts athleticism. I agree about keeping Dutcher, but not about Acker. Don't misunderstand, I think Coach Acker was a great hire! But, nobody knew who he was before he came here. Everybody was doing a lot of hand wringing when Coach Hutson left and it has all worked out just fine. And, I really do think that Coach Velasquez' value to the staff is underestimated.

Do think Acker has been very valuable recruiting - Che and others from the East Coast he has been working on with Che's assistance . He seems to be able to establish a good communication level with recruits . Especially in parts of the country we have not been able to tap into
I do not know if Acker has also been of any assistance of the development of Yanni or others - had been reported that he is very good at being able to develop guys similar to what he did at BSU . So do see losing him would hurt the continued solid play of the Aztecs going forward and the recruiting .
I wish that there was a guy on the current squad that could make a big jump for the 2020-21 team . But do not know of the health/injuries of Nathan or his development- he did not have that much basketball growing up . AG has also had injury problems in HS and both years here- can he stay healthy . Keshan seems to have a lot of athletic ability but mostly so far on offense . Can he advance on defense/rebounding also his shot and FT's . Joel seems to need a lot of development to make the big contribution needed .
Do see that if Matt continues to stay dedicated to keeping his weight in control could be even more valuable as he wants to be a player in the NBA but most likely at the 3 position . Che looks to have a lot of talent but will be coming off an injury so will need time to get it all together and playing against better players in college then in HS . Also seeing him wanting to play the 3 or 2 rather then the 4 .
So do see an important need to get a physical guy that likes to play down low for the 2020-21 team

A weak conference hasn't held Gonzaga back, so it shouldn't hold us back either. ^THIS^ And according to my Zag alum buddy at work it wasn't until their first ever #1 seed in 2012-13 that they took their recruiting to the next level, i.e. since then they're now thought of as a "major" program even though they're in a mid-major conference. Food for thought for those of you that think we should tank a game in order to stay in the west as a 2-seed.

There are players that will just want to win more games, and there are players that want a paycheck. We need to get more players into the NBA.

Both Butler and Dinwiddie are great recruits but they will be freshmen next year. One of the big differences this year is that we haven't relied on freshmen like we did the previous two years. Coach Hut even commented that "we got old real fast." I expect Keyshad will get a lot more time next year. I believe the biggest reason we don't see him much is he is still learning the defensive scheme. Had he been here last year or the year before he would have seen more court time - but those teams were not near as good as this team. As for Acker, well losing him would likely mean we would have to give Che a release. I watch Acker on the bench and he has a good rapport with the players, who speak highly of him. He has good SOCAL recruitment ties as well and that is important. I'd like to have him for at least a couple of years and then see him get hired on as a HC at a decent program. You want that because it shows your program is producing.

JMO As for Coach Acker...you do bring up an interesting point regarding Evans. However, things have changed considerably with the program since he committed, and from what I understand he has built a pretty rapport with Butler and Dinwiddie. He just might like the situation here A LOT more than he did 5 months ago. My point regarding Coach Acker is more a macro one than a micro one. Assistant coaches come and go from successful programs. It's inevitable. But, whether we are talking about Coach Fisher or Coach Dutcher, we have always been able to find these talented, well connected, assistant coaches when one of our guys leaves. IMO, that speaks to the HC, the facilities, the weather, the program's (now) winning tradition (banners). All I'm saying is that if/when Coach Acker leaves for something better, I have faith that Dutch will find the right guy to replace him (and bring in another Che Evans type perhaps).

"As for Acker, well losing him would likely mean we would have to give Che a release." Those are my thoughts also. I don't know about that. He's already changed his mind from Boise State and now SDSU is very nationally prominent. Wherever Acker would go would most likely be either a smaller school or one in a rebuild mode.If he's as potentially talented as he supposed to be, I wouldn't think he'd want to spend a year or two in that atmosphere. All we have to do is show him Jaden McDaniel's trajectory and let him make up his own mind. He went from someone who was predicted to be in the top 3 or 4 slots to falling down to the 14-16 range. I'm still not sure he won't fall farther on draft day. Sure, he's got potential but he's been such a head case that a lot of GMs and coaches won't want to deal with that when there's another very talented player right there to pick from. But worse than that is how long and hard this year had to have been when his team has done so badly. He gets regularly blasted in Seattle for the ways he does or doesn't play. No matter what someone says, that has to affect a 19 year-old kid somewhat.

Do trust that the Aztec coaches ( certainly hope our AD is talking with the JAM group and others on what they or others could do to keep Dutcher and Acker ) are using this fabulous season to help them recruit to recruit a 5/4 player . Numerous successful things going on that should assist them in getting a quality guy but one never knows what a recruit may want but think this could be a great chance for the coaches to land one . Although think Yanni has performed even better then anticipated .
Could be a very exciting time for MM and then the coaches trying to get the best player to replace Yanni ... during the spring summer time .
Agree the staff has got some quality guys coming in from HS - but they are going to be freshmen so will have to learn a lot the college game and play some Defense and even - rebounding .
If Malachi does he go to NBA could also be major factor also . Replacing two very experienced guards is not easy if you are freshmen . Yes Trey P and Adam S will be here but not sure how much they can contribute if we are looking to be a factor in MM again .
We are having a great season this year but have not exactly won the MW Conference the previous years so need to stay near the top if we hope to be a consistent team similar to the Zags .
