Did anyone catch ESPN’s Make/Miss today? I was out at lunch and saw what looked like a section featuring Mitchell’s dunk last night and comparing it to Obi Toppin’s. The segment said something about the dunks and getting ready for March Madness.

In the words of Bill Walton: Throw it down, young man! As much as a loathe to hear him do color, I would have loved to hear his on-air reaction to that slam. Hey, say whatever you want about Bill, he was wearing his Aztec Red and Black last night! No doubt who he was rooting for.

I commented on that on that last night to the fans sitting next to me. Mitchell's basketball IQ has increased a bunch this year. Along with his new diet he must be eating a lot of brain food. To be honest not sure his BB IQ has increased as much as maturity, practice and being in better shape physically and mentally has allowed to do all the things he saw on the court. If u ever listen to him speak he's pretty damn intelligent and also talks a good basketball game. Sometimes it just takes time for your body to catch up? Could just be the beginning! You might be right. Maybe now his body can actually do what his brain has been trying to accomplish. But he certainly is making fewer bad cross court passes and bulling into a crowd under the basket this year. Whatever the cause, we're all loving it.

And think a lot less lazy D fouls but, a little more aggressive D fouls.

I've been calling him "The Beast" this season although I'd call last night's dunk "The Hammer" - he's been averaging at least one Hammer per game (e.g. his put back vs. AF).

All I can say is: Them boys from the Inland Empire definitely know how to play serious basketball!!!! (Mitchell, Leonard, Slaughter)

And to think, MM was only recruited by CSUN initially. I'm sure there are a bunch of blue blood programs doing a face palm.

Yea, if you look at that video of him dunking on Shareef O' Neal, you'll notice that he took his man off the dribble left handed, and then proceeded to posterize a dunk over Shareef. There were so many good things he did on that one play to know that he had big time potential.

Matt's IQ is really shown when he is driving or moving without the ball inside. Some of the subtle moves he makes down low remind me of JJ O'Brien. Except Mitchell adds much more athletic ability and power.

I’ve gone from “Oh No” Matt has the ball, to, pass it to Matt. His transformation as a basketball player from last year to this year is nothing short of amazing. Last night I stood next to Matt, he’s one very solid human. I’ve also listened to perhaps every interview that has included Matt. He’s a very fine young man. Proud to be an Aztec.

If Mensah comes back? If he does he isn't going to start and the entire team has morphed since the start of the season. Your asking me to bet on a completely different scenario. Of course Matt would start because Mensah will not. Nice try! Suckers bet! No It's killing you and your ego because you have to be right. I hope your nobody's boss. How come you never answer my questions? Sorry. Didn't see a question in there. The answer's simple. Schakel. He's a typical sixth man anyway. Three-point shooter who can get on a hot streak, especially when he comes in for brief periods and the defense forgets to guard him. He's definitely a change-of-pace guy. And no need to start with the personal attacks. I'm not an ego maniac. And I'm well-liked by my fellow employees, colleagues and subordinates -- not that that's in anyway relevant to this conversation. Listen, I made a prognostication. I saw very early in the season that Mitchell was on his way to having a monster year. I said so. I was pilloried. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have been right. I've been wrong about these things many times. Yep, Shakel's the epitome of a sixth man off the bench. Instant scoring. Mitchell is a starter because he does all facets of the game well. No doubt.

I don't see any realistic scenario where Mensah takes someone's starting role for the simple reason that he hasn't played in over two months, assuming he comes back at all. I know he's been conditioning, but to get him up to game speed will be tough. Maybe if there's a couple blow out situations to stick him into during the MW tourney? Perhaps he can play for Grossmont or Mesa like MLB does to get returning players game time by having them play in the minors?

I posted at the end of last season that Matt's stats declined nearly linearly after his big game against YBU. At the time I thought dropping some weight would benefit him, at least defensively and dealing with playing in the MWC. I still think he hasn't quite reached his full potential in building muscle and adding quickness. I don't watch enough NBA to know how he fits there but he does have a pretty complete game when you consider offense and defense.

If MM lost a few more pounds and hit the weights he might be able to further transform himself into a really "cut" player. That would be even more intimidating to all of the Aztec's opponents.

I think Matt's already a cut player and very intimidating. Meh, to the losing more weight and it making him better. He's already there.

Yep, I probably saw just about every game Chris played in. A bit of an enigma was Chris. He had a solid Junior year at about 9 pts and 5 rbs per game and went down to like 6 and 2.5 in his senior year. I can't remember though if he was hurt or what happened his senior year.

I liked him as a player but unfortunately, my first thought of him is always airballing the FT in the historical comeback loss to UNLV.
