Don't understand all the pearl clutching about Mensah's medical condition. Athletes are different than private citizens, who are protected by HIPPA medical privacy codes. I'm sure most NCAA athletes sign waivers allowing coaches, publicists and administrators to talk freely about various athletic-related injuries. No one has a problem yakking about Arop's dislocated shoulder, or the knee that Mitchell had scoped in the offseason, or that Polee had a heart condition. But Mensah's blood clot? OMG! STFU! Even though every single person on this board knows what his condition is and what the general prognosis is. I'm sure if an athlete tells a coach he wants to keep the medical condition private and not turn it into a media circus, the coach, and likely the media, will respect that, which seems to be the case here. But to act like fans are violating some sort of HIPPA law by discussing the medical status of a key SDSU basketball player, well, that's a bit rich. If everyone knows what’s going on, as you suggest, then I would say the hand wringing and speculation is unnecessary and inappropriate. I don’t believe it’s a HIPAA violation, but it’s gossipy and in poor form. I also think there’s a distinction between a health condition that was caused by participating in the sport versus a non-athletic condition. Every injury you name above either took place on the court, in plain view, or was likely caused by playing basketball.

If "poor form" was a condition or criteria for exclusion on this board, we'd have a whole lot less posts allowed. It seems almost every post is look at as "poor form" by somebody.

Well, actually, pulmonary embolisms are often the result of an athletic activity. Elite athletes are at higher risk of PEs than the regular population. A bruise in an athlete's arm or leg may cause clotting that eventually travels up to the lungs. Further, signs of Mensah struggling with PE first appeared during a Dec. 4 game in the high-altitude of Fort Collins against Colorado St. Risk factors for PE include frequent air travel, cold weather/winter months, and high elevation.

Wasn't this what some poster mentioned weeks ago and was blasted for having the nerve to talk about it? Anyone going to blast Zeigler with the same ferocity for REALLY speculating and to do so to everyone in San Diego? And I'm sure Ziegler finally ran with the story with the blessing of Dutcher and Mensah because there was already so much speculation out there they felt they needed to address it. Additionally, the article is full of interesting information about PE that might help some other athlete recognize any danger signs. I think it's an important piece and a public service.

Best wishes to Nathan, hope he'll make a great recovery (I'm sure he will), and look forward to seeing him crush it with Malachi and the crew next season.
Looks like Arop's (along with others obviously) role has just become even more important, which I'm confident he can step up. I'd mention Mitchell & Wetzell stepping up too but they were already contributing at a high level. Next man up!

Someone on the original thread said they had a source and was blasted because he shared the info. In the article today, Ziegler said he has sources and discussed what is believed to be the medical issue. He is writing about it without the players approval as well since Mensah declined to comment. Are the people that were saying how wrong and rude and disrespectful and so offended that an athletes health is being discussed emailing and commenting to Ziegler onTwitter how inappropriate and insensitive it is for him to speculate? Or is it ok cuz it’s his job?
We all want Nathan to get healthy as soon an possible. His health is more important than basketball.

Thanks for the motivation to contact the newspaper regarding the speculation and the confirmation of medical information that was not desired to be released. Mark even published a quote from Dutcher “citing medics privacy laws”. I let them know that is was a shame

It's time to move on at the 5 spot for this season and start Narain alongside Wetzell -- build up Nolan's minutes before March rolls around. Mensah's health is the only priority right now.

I think the bigger key is if Nolan Narain can step up - perhaps similar to Kameron Rooks' emergence at the end of Dutcher's first season as head coach. He has the size and skills to do so, we'll see if he puts it together.

The bottom like is that the last thread on this topic was locked just yesterday (maybe for good reason?). Perhaps the mods needed to add a note for the obtuse members of this board who felt the need to asininely resurrect another pointless speculation thread. Please excuse those of us on our "high horse" who thought common sense would prevail and we'd actually wait for the school to divulge an official diagnosis/time table, before the need to further discuss it ad nauseam.

I wish Nathan a speedy recovery to full health. Has to be frustrating as hell for him to be having to sit during this magical time in Aztec BB history! I also wish continued good health to Yanni, cuz if he goes down...well, I don't want to even think about it!

Arop's dislocated shoulder, Mitchell's knee, Polee's heart condition were all made public... presumably with the clear permission of the student athlete. That is NOT the case with N Mensah. My issue was with the poster who clearly got inside information from the team, but did not respect the wishes of the team and Nate himself and went ahead and posted the information on this site. THAT was horribly unethical behavior. If the team and student athlete want a medical issue to be kept private, it should stay private. Going rogue with 'insider scoop' in this case is a really sh!tty thing to do.

Going rogue by Ziegler was also a pretty bad thing to do, when his own article made clear Mensah didn't want to talk about it. However, in an interesting twist, it might not have been unethical - journalists have a different set of ethics and frequently can use factual information derived from sources who obtained and/or disclosed that information unethically (in some cases even illegally). if there was a HIPPA or FERPA waiver, that should have been disclosed in the article. It wasn't. And we don't have to email or write Ziegler directly. He reads this board - he's shamelessly stolen information from it (recent examples include Aztecbill statistical analysis) without attribution multiple times in the past. I guess Ziegler thought it was worth it to apparently betray Nathan's and Coach Dutcher's trust in this case.

Agree completely here... getting the information out like Zeigler does in this article -- with the blessing of the team & player -- is great. It's that latter bit that makes all the difference.

Mensah not offering a comment is NOT the same as not wanting the story published. I cannot believe that Ziegler would jeopardize his role covering the team by publishing the article without permission (team + player).

In my opinion the team handled this situation poorly from the outset. If Nathan doesn’t want the medical info public then so be it, but for the team to go for 3 weeks with no acknowledgement of how long he might be out (or just saying they don’t know right now and are still determining it) is of course going to lead to speculation and questions in a season where he’s a star player on a national title contender.

It's ironic that the same people who would rail against Zeigler for putting the info out are also likely the ones all pissy about the speculation threads, yet he just put an end to them by doing so. People will now just move on.

I'll start out by saying I have no idea what I'm talking about (to save anybody else from having to say it). Is there a possibility that the "witholding" was done intentionally to keep opponents in the dark? I have no idea if, or what, the obligations are regarding disclosure of injuries by college athletic programs. I know that that sort of thing goes on in the Pros all the time to keep other teams guessing.
