Fastball/curveball guy. Had a good curve with the Giants, just struggled with his release point and mechanics. Latest in a line of guys who have used Japan to really fine tune their craft. Low-key solid signing to an already top 5 bullpen.

According to the U-T, he has basically dropped the slider and now throws a harder curveball.

Let Balsley handle him.

If Johnson stays with the big club out of Spring Training, Balsley will have nothing to do with him. Balsley is no longer the Padres pitching coach.

Balsley is still employed by the Padres and will ceretainly be present for spring training.
The Padres were extemely STUPID to not retain Balsley as their pitching coach for the team!

Which is why I said if he makes the big club, Balsley will have nothing more to do with him. I guess I needed to use the word "more" to make my original point more clear.

Bullpen reinforcements galore with Stammen returning. The depth of the pen is ludicrous at this point. The entire cost of the Padres 2020 pen is less than what Kenley Jansen and Joe Kelly will make next year for the Dodgers. The added flexibility gives the Padres a ton of options to use openers and multi-inning guys in different spots. Using an opener on Lucchesi day for example would be a great strategy. Something like Strahm for an inning or two, Lucchesi for four or five, Muñoz or Pomeranz to Yates.
