I am surely one of the few AztecMesa members who was going to school in California in the 1940s. For that reason I believe that you may find my viewpoint on the recent history of this state (i.e., the past seven decades) of interest. To be brief, I think we are in a lot of trouble. Furthermore, I don't see any evidence that those in control in Sacramento either understand our problems or have a clue about how they might be solved. We face many problems, and I do not attribute all of them to any particular party. I do, however, believe strongly that the fact that California is now effectively a one-party state makes our problems much harder to solve. You many disagree, of course. So what are our problems? The article I have linked goes into that question in detail. Here's a thought. If you disagree with any of the author's points, how about responding with counter arguments. Keep in mind that ad-hominem attacks, sarcasm, etc., are the rhetorical equivalent of pleading nolo contendere. My concern is that we find solutions, not score political points. www.city-journal.org/california-high-tech-feudalismAzWm

My concern is that we find solutions, not score political points. www.city-journal.org/california-high-tech-feudalismAzWm Plenty of blame to go around. When I first moved to Poway in the late 80's I was a bit surprised to see Families of 2 living on 8 acre lots, 5 car garages, 4,000 sq. ft. living areas and using the electricity and water of 2,000 people villages in 3rd world. Of course this is the norm in plenty of areas of California. I thought at the time that this was not sustainable. This has no party affiliation. I used to work in land use and rich Republicans and Democrats will both show up to the same hearing to fight anything that affects their view, or affects their zoning. No wonder the gap has widened. As far as the homeless issue is concerned, what to do about the addicted and just down and out is debatable... however, the "yellers", people that crap in public and just plain crazy people out there is a concern. There used to be places where we put people like that. Places like Camarillo, Napa etc. were all closed in the 70's and 80's. Some blame Reagan, some blame Democrats for shutting them down... but some people out there just shouldn't be in the streets. Glad I'm not the one who has to figure it out. Oh, and if the Right cared about the middle class, what about the hundreds of Commercial Mom and Pop salmon fishing boats that used to run out of harbors from Morro Bay all the way to Crescent City? They died a slow and painful death because the water quality was not sustained in the spawning rivers because of development and draw down by Agribusiness. Signs on the I-5 that talk about fish versus people and no water , no food are extremely misleading. Big agribusiness in the central valley grow high water intensity tree crops like almonds and pomegranates for the Asian and European markets to make the most money they can...and that's all.

Plenty of blame to go around. Plenty of blame to go around between democrats and democrats. Going back to 1959, only in one single year (1970) did the Republicans have control in the California State Legislature. The California Democratic Party runs this state. They currently have a 75% Super-majority and the Governor. Republicans in California are powerless to do anything or stop anything. It is like in Spider-Man, with all the power comes all of the responsibility, and leftists working in land use are one of the biggest causes of wealth stratification and homelessness in California today. I'm sure you've heard of the housing they were building for the homeless that are coming in at $700k per unit. That is due to decades of efforts from land use wonks, not families back in the 1980's who had big yards in Poway.

I think we are in a lot of trouble. Furthermore, I don't see any evidence that those in control in Sacramento either understand our problems or have a clue about how they might be solved. The problem is democracy. We’ve known this fatal flaw, and it is fatal, for nearly 2 ½ millennia. "Masculine republics give way to feminine democracies, and feminine democracies give way to tyranny." – Aristotle 380 BC The United States has lasted as long as it has because the Founders recognized democracy for the poison that it is. The very best parts of our Constitution and Bill of Rights are about putting a boot on the neck of democracy. The First Amendment, the very first thing they thought of when guaranteeing rights, was that the popular majority could not use the power of government to stop a tiny minority from voicing unpopular opinions. In Federalist Paper No. 10, it was made very clear how much disdain the Founders had for democracy. “Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” – Federalist Paper No. 10 Then came the Progressive Era, and thus began our slow descent into hell. While Progressives in California were busy sterilizing “citizens of the wrong type”, and Woodrow Wilson was showing the KKK propaganda film The Birth of a Nation in the White House, the 17th Amendment came into effect. Prior to that, the Congressmen in the House of Representatives were the only democratically elected Federal politicians. Senators had been elected by State Assemblies, and were not voted on at all by citizens, but after the 17th Amendment the Senators too became democratically elected. Wilson also set about destroying the 1st Amendment with the Sedition Act of 1918 which let the government prosecute “disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language”. Here today there are Progressives trying to abolish the Electoral College so the US President will be democratically elected, and several proposals have been made to do away with lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court to make that branch too more subject to democratic elections. Progressives are also pushing the idea of “Hate Speech” laws so that only government approved speech can be given voice, and what constitutes hate speech will be determined by popular mandate so that tiny minorities can no longer voice unpopular opinions. As Aristotle pointed out so long ago, the masculine republic is giving way to the feminine democracy. We know what comes next because it always comes next. There isn’t a solution. The clock has already started. The best we can hope for is to delay as long as we can the push toward total democracy and the socialists whose programs would inflate the currency into worthlessness before they fire up the death camps. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! well, thousands of societies and cultures have crashed and burned historically. How many were "democracies"? Vitually none. Every society, culture and us as individuals (if we are lucky).. has a beginning , a middle and an end. What is occurring is a natural progression on some level. Somebody made fun of a 16 year old who was concerned about the future. Wow...what's to worry about? I have worked on the environmental field for 40 years...I've seen changes in animal populations, plant communities, human population expansion and resource exploitation that are concerning for long term sustainability. But yea ...its the progressives haha. As far as death camps are concerned,go over to FOXnews.com and look at the comments section. You can find plenty of "only good libby is a dead libby on there". Doesnt matter what's coming is coming.

AzWm You’re not a libertarian, but if you wish to call yourself one, you should be very ready to grapple with the fact your ideology is no longer viable in American politics. You’ve got an idiot wannabe-facist or whoever the DNC decides to promote. You won’t be around for the results, but should think two or three times about which side you want to be remembered for supporting. Just IMO I guess - Merry Holidays. .

Lived my first 35 years in California and have have spent the last 20 years in Texas. I can assure you, Republican-dominated Texas has no better answers for its problems than Democrat-dominated California.
