I feel for Joe - That team is going nowhere, even with the best player of this generation. And they are likely about to be hammered by MLB over the tragic situation involving Tyler Skaggs.

It does seem like a tough position for Maddon to be in right off the bat. Skaggs had alcohol, oxycodone and fentanyl in his system. Fentanyl is heroin on crack. Maybe Joe can turn things around. I hope this opens some people's eyes to just how serious the opiate problem is in this country. "Try Not To Suck" and good luck to him!!

Considering his past, specifically the tone deaf narrative he displayed towards the Adisson Russell situation and the delicate nature of this situation, he is going to be under a major microscope. I don't envy him.

True, but he did coach in their org for decades, and spent time with the big league club as bench coach. I'm sure the organization is special to him, pure nostalgia. Plus, it's Orange County!
All is not necessarily lost in Halo land. Yes, they have the Astros there but the Rangers and Mariners are trash and the A's are talented but overturn the roster often due to their meager financial resources.
This is a team that absolutely needs to upgrade their talent right now, and not waste any more prime Trout years. Therefore, I would expect to see them heavily involved on guys like Gerrit Cole (who is from Newport Beach), Keuchel, Hamels, Roark, etc this winter. Their current rotation and bullpen is f'ing terrible.
After 5-6 years of an ugly, ugly farm system they are also back to respectability in that dept (ranked 9th by MILB) with Jo Adell on his way up, and other solid pieces in Canning, Jones, Suarez, and Taylor Ward.
I am curious if they will pick up Calhoun's option.

I wouldn't. For me, it depends on what FA pieces they can add this winter. They need alot of pitching.

Not enough pitching, the medical staff is a trainwreck, saddled with Pujols for another couple of years. A lot to overcome. And I think baseball throws the hammer down at them for the Skaggs situation as mentioned.

You don't need to win your division to make the postseason.
See: Nationals 2019
I think we're mostly in agreement here. The Angels are not close to contention. Nor am I a fan of the club.
But they are a large market team, and Moreno has to feel the pressure of Trouts prime years here, he hasnt shied away from spending money in the past he just spent it foolishly (see: Josh Hamilton, Pujols, CJ Wilson). Doesn't mean they can't hit on a Gerritt Cole or something. And to add to this, Eppler has a pretty good rep in baseball circles - he's trying to clean up the $#!+ he inherited from Reagins and Dipoto. How Dipoto stills gets jobs is beyond me.
With Albert off the books in 2022, perhaps they look at backloading a couple of large FA additions. They will have some options, for sure.
Again, I dont see them as being anywhere close but alot can change in a winter + young studs like Adell on the way to help.
Big question for 2020: Is Tommy La Stella a late blossoming breakout performer? Or was 2019 a one off?

Whatever happens beyond Maddon's tenure is not in question, I'm just referring to the next 3 years. I guessed Cole to the Angels back in....June, I think? And you don't have to win your division, but are the Angels able to beat out Minnesota, Cleveland, New York, Boston, Tampa or Oakland?
