I would be very happy with Madden. I keep hearing this (although I think he ends up in Anaheim) but I don't see why. Plus, his comments on domestic violence and sexual assault are really....not good. Maddon* boys, not Madden. Anyways - yes, some of the statheads critqiue his "in game strategy" a bit harshly but the guy is a pretty good manager. Most wins in the MLB the last 5 years, a WS title, and he took a budget TB team to a WS as well. 3X MOY. I remember alot of people were critical of Bochys "strategy" when he was here in SD, 3 titles later in SF....... Point is, we could do a LOT worse. But I think he ends up in Anaheim too.

Both the Cubs and Giants have significantly higher payrolls than the Padres likely ever will. Cubs had a 211 million dollar payroll this year, 2nd highest....and couldn't even crack the wild card. Maddon's Tampa work was impressive, considering their constraints.

Would you disagree that Bochy did a hell of a job in SF? And that they had a good payroll but not usually Top 3-5, and also were likely not the most talented 25-man roster in their WS wins?
Curious.

I think Brian Sabean was a really good architect of that team, their last two World Series wins they were 7th in payroll and 5th in payroll. In 2012, they had prime Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, a shutdown pen and Buster Posey winning a batting title. You don't win 3 titles by accident, no matter how you slice it. Bochy is a Hall of Fame manager.

This is year three of the Padre rebuild. You have to objectively look at it as anything post 2016 is on its own merits. I was referring to when Fowler and the O'Malleys took over. So it will be eight years next season and five years since the 2015 debacle. They didn't really show any particular direction for the plan until they hired Preller as GM near the end of the 2014 season. In 2015, they went with a "quick fix" approach (probably under pressure from someone in the ownership) bringing in aging former stars and retreads (Kemp, Upton, etc.). When it quickly became apparent that wasn't working, they finally committed to the current long term strategy to build the minor league system and built from within, supplementing with difference-maker FA's when needed. So I think you can only gauge the current rebuild process from 2015 when Preller's influence became the main driving force. They've been saying for a couple years now that 2020 was the target window for the process to show results in the form of contending. I believe the expectation is that nothing short of a wild card appearance in the playoffs will be acceptable. We've seen the promise of the rebuild approach (Tatis, Paddack, primarily and a bit from Lauer, Lucchesi, Urias, and France). Now, with a year of experience under their belts, everyone from fans, to front office, to ownership, is expecting results.

Ok, of the candidates already mentioned by the media:
Yes: Girardi, Bochy, Maddon, Matheny
No: I don’t have any definitive no’s, although Ron Washington is close.
Apparently it is rare for a first time hire manager to win a World Series. Managers who have experienced getting fired by another organization usually have better success the second or third time around.

Acee reported it will be Ron Washington, with Tingler on staff (hopefully). Announcement after the World Series.

So you saying Washington is only window dressing🙄 No, I'm saying what has been rumored by multiple sources - Washington on a 3 year deal, with Tingler as the bench coach to take over after Washington retires. Only dilemma now is that the Rangers reportedly won't let Tingler go unless it's a managerial job. We'll see what unfolds. Getting both would be a home run for the franchise.

If true, I applaud the move.
Ron Washington is an exceptional manager, who is beloved by his players by all accounts and is widely considered one of the best infield coaches in major league baseball. Back to back World Series for TEX, one of which they certainly should have won if not for a couple of key defensive gaffes, particularly in the outfield.

I would have no problem with Washington for sure.

According to ESPN (at least per "a source"), the Padres have hired Jayce Tingler to be their new manager.
Confirmed in the U-T this a.m. by Kevin Acee.

It's official. Tingler.
I'm disappointed, I wanted Wash. But, I'll keep an open mind.
