How quickly do the Pads fill their managerial opening and with whom?
Maddon, Girardi or Scioscia. Someone who will have the balls to tell Preller that winning will require some experienced veteran arms in the rotation and bullpen.

No thanks on Scioscia. He had a bad rep for being adverse to analytics, and butted heads with the GM there at the end of his tenure. Of course I give him credit for his WS title (17 years ago) but the game has changed. I lived in North OC for most of the last 15 years and Mike was known to be the guy who sided with the vets and keep trotting out Pujols in the 4 slot, and other questionable lineups despite production at that time. I've also read Girardi was canned in favor of Boone (who so far is doing great despite all of NYYs injuries) because of reluctance to embrace analytics and the "new" MLB. Just what I have read, anyhow. I think Moises Alou is intriguing and worth a close look, I would at least ask Bochy if he is interested, and I think Mark Loretta is worth a look. www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/padres-fire-andy-green-13-candidates-to-become-the-next-manager-in-san-diego/Ron Washington, hmm. Went to two World Series with the Rangers.

As long as it is someone who pushes analytics and data driven procedures, that's really what matters. There are a lot of intriguing first time candidates, but I just see Preller caving to experience, knowing this is his last hire.

And for those old school guys who are going to bash the "new age" thinking......there are plenty of old school, experienced managers who embrace analytics in todays game. Terry Francona, for one has embraced them much more than he did earlier in his career.

This is just such a massively important hire considering the stakes and the timing.

It's time to show the fans who have supported the Friars throughout the years the gold. 💰

You have to objectively look at it as anything post 2016 is on its own merits.

The only thing I see is much of the data which guided many personnel decisions will need to be completely re-evaluated due the dawning of the Ultra Live Ball Era. (A new term I just came up with, feel free to use it). A successful manager/GM will be the one who can shore up the defense and figure out a pitching game plan to counter the home run barrage.

The ball is going to be changed. To what degree is anyone's guess, but the video game numbers are going to die down. Manfred knows it's bad for the sport to have this home run explosion, as it's going to throw arbitration and contracts in general way out of whack, which owners will not pay for, which will lead to more chaos. And all teams have their own internal processes as it is to quantify data. The ball being changed will help the Padres, the pitching staff has one of the worst "luck" factors in baseball when it comes to home runs.

So it will be eight years next season and five years since the 2015 debacle.

Alou has taken his name out of consideration. He was a favorite of the brass and considered the choice if he wanted the job. Just doesn't seem to want to manage in any capacity.

The rumor from ESPN seems that Maddon is the favorite for being the Angels manager after they fired Brad Ausmus. Just speculation at this point though.
