AJ Hinch came out OK. Don't forget, he managed the D-Backs for a year and a half, with an even lower win percentage than Andy Green had with the Padres. Then, he eventually resurfaced with the Astros. You may have misunderstood me. I wasn't implying that Hinch did not turn out fine, of course he did. One of the best managers in the game. My point was, Hinch was brought in once most of the tanking was done in Houston, and wasn't as scarred mentally as someone who had just taking a beating for 3-4 years. I am sure you would agree 1 1/2 seasons isnt the same as the four Green had here? Hinch is also the superior manager. Hinch came in after Mills, Porter, and Coop had absorbed the tanking years. Now SD turns to a new manager, as the team is (hopefully) on the verge of contending. Difference between the rebuilds may likely be SD doesnt have the offensive pieces that HOU was developing, but SD has superior SP pieces. The bats HOU drafted and developed were just insane. In some respects, perhaps I did misunderstand your point. But...I don't think the Padres were tanking. They just weren't very good. But if they were tanking, they weren't very good at that, either.

The Padres only had one top 5 pick in Preller's tenure - MacKenzie Gore. The Astros had the #1 pick (Correa) and then turned the #2 pick into Alex Bregman. Hard to do much better than that.

Yeah, you're right. And this was not a full scale tank job in San Diego, I would agree with that.
Re: Houston. They nabbed Springer at the 11 pick too, yes?

Tanking at it's finest. And it seems to have paid off. Quite well.

They really do a great job in the front office. Their player development and analytics departments are massive. Luhnow fully embraces the new wave. They are hiring coaches with experience in coding to take advantage of new technology.
