www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/5/30/18642535/california-ab5-misclassify-employees-contractorsCA Democrats are likely going to pass AB5 in a Quixotic quest to generate more funds for their pet programs and all they will do is create more working poor and drive business out of California. So in the end, the State will be on the hook for more benefits with less tax money from businesses coming in. Their next logical victim will be home owners but that is another story. In CA's pursuit of more revenue from Uber and Lyft, the clueless lefist clowns in Sacramento will attack the livelihoods of a large portion of CA workforce: independent contractors. Beside the ride sharing companies, all sorts of companies in CA will soon have sleazy Democrat lawyers crawling up their a$$: Real Estate, Engineering, Financial Services, Trucking, Legal, Construction, Sales, Landscaping, etc., etc. For Uber and Lyft, they may have to buckle under and guess what, their drivers will earn less (as Uber and Lyft pay all the new taxes and fees) and they will be limited to under 30 hours to avoid a myriad of Socialist unfunded mandates (as seen in the Obama economy). Big loser is the worker and CA will still have to subsidize their medical. The other businesses will either eliminate or reduce independent contractors for fear of lawsuits or leave the state for more business friendly environments. Loser again is the worker. Incomes will fall from consultant rates and/or commissions to salaried positions, if anything at all, but then possibly only for short periods of time. But hey, they can now get unemployment.

haha "Leftist Clowns"... this will be nothing compared to what your your orange jesus is doing right now. He's playing with our economy and China like its a kid's game. China knows he is up for reelection and they want to destroy Trump and the US. Remember, he represents us now. China can play the long game, and Trump can't (successfully). Trump's game is going to send us in a tailspin within 9 months.. take it to the bank.

Trump's game is going to send us in a tailspin within 9 months.. take it to the bank. Seriously, Trump is playing games with our economy? News Alert!! You are watching/reading way too much garbage from CNN!! China has been manipulating their currency in order to control the U.S. and the global economy long before Trump. The difference is, he is trying to do something about it. I seriously doubt what "President Trump" is doing is going to send us into a tailspin. Being unable to fix Obama's failures might though. And we're you not part of the Trump won't make it six months ring? As far as the topic and California goes, do you live in a cave? From your past posts, it's most likely a paid for cave. People who are established in CA are fine. But other people and other generations who are trying to make a living are screwed. The average median income does not justify the price of a home, rent, gas or any other over priced goods and services in that poorly run state. (Emphasis on poor) Nearly 80 percent of people working in that state are living paycheck to paycheck. That's higher but very close to the national average as well. Driving up to three hours because they can't afford to live in the cities they work in is disgusting. And you think that's ok? The idiots running California continue to lie about the states real problems. Infrastructure being a huge part of it. I guess building a 100 billion dollar bullet train in the Central Valley is more important than trying to get 25 million people who shouldn't be living in Southern California more water. How do mostly and extremely wealthy Democrats continue to claim CA is the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world when it's 2.5 trillion in debt and climbing? California is a beautiful state being destroyed by horrible people running it. California is a beautiful state being destroyed by horrible people running it. Stay cozy!! Are you serious? First of all, you don't know what I watch. Plus, there are more financial gurus besides my personal financial advisor that thinks the $#!+ is going to hit the fan in the next year. We can discuss this again in 9 months or so. Do I live in a cave? I have only worked around the World for the last 40 years in environmental planning and wildlife film making. I have been in California since the mid 1950's, and I have seen radical societal, environmental and economic changes. I am pessimistic about the future. In another thread I mentioned critical mass and carrying capacity. I mentioned that my daughter and her husband make almost $250,000 a year and can't buy in SF. Historically, societies, large and small have come and gone.....thousands of times. Everything has a beginning, middle and an end, including you and me. All signs point to us being on the backside of the middle. I am actually agreeing with you that we are f****d! Cozy?? Is that why I just applied for, and received, a passport for a foreign country? I have 60 gallons of freshwater in my garage but know that it would be a hell of a lot better to live near a permanent water source like in the Pacific Northwest. You think the Democrats are screwing us? You better look in the mirror because its all of us. www.forbes.com/sites/thomasdelbeccaro/2018/04/19/the-top-four-reasons-california-is-unsustainable/ www.abc10.com/article/entertainment/television/programs/why-guy/why-guy-why-does-the-california-government-claim-surplus-with-a-deficit/103-621073125

Now we have rent control from the comrade clowns. Fostering immobility, decreasing incentives for new housing, guaranteeing that land lords will charge allowed maximums and transferring maintenance expenses to tenants (leading to delapidation) will surely solve the homeless problem (rolleyes).
Even liberal economists say it is bad policy but they do it anyhow. Their policies caused the problem in the first place and now their policies will exacerbate it even more.
But the clueless leftist will think the California politicians are heroes. The spiral downward for California continues....

And now these stalwarts allow College Players to profit from their status on College Sports teams (regardless of how that relationship with that team is funded (by scholarships from tax payer paid subsidy or grants, scholarships by other student's tuition fees coupled with private endowments, etc)).
And there will be complex business agreements needed by these students..er..athletes (which would mean that they will likely need to retain legal representation). So, soon enough, we will have every College player with any potential to play professional sports getting sweetheart deals for legal (see sports) representation while still in school. It is going to be legalized Reggie Bush agreements X 1000 in College Sports.
Others states will follow CA's suit to keep their star recruits from leaving for CA exclusively. Shoe Companies, Uniform Companies, Drink Companies, Video Game Companies, etc will not only be making deals with the individual athletes, they will also be making deals with Schools & Conferences with a quid pro quo promising how much more they can offer their University's or their Conference's athletes for the athlete's likeness/endorsement. Letter of intents will be replaced by a contract for representation.
Then comes the strikes/Union representation as the average player left out in the cold wants their share of the pie too. Reasoning being that if not for the other players, the team does not exist, the game does not go on, the tickets are not sold, no TVs are turned on, no advertisers are needed, etc). Aha - I think I understand it now - the College Athlete Player's Union (and their contributions to Democrat Politicians) will sooner get their hands on the College Sports money till with this plan.
So College Sports at the upper levels will likely morph into something different altogether. Perhaps it will be a boon for all involved but perhaps also, over time, College sports may become as compelling and popular as semi-pro football, developmental league basketball and farm league baseball.

It's already a semi-pro league in football, basketball and baseball for the elites in the P5 conferences. But yeah, this has disaster written all over it for the G5 schools and many programs just surviving in the P5.

Well, seeing as the governor of California signed this horrible piece of legislation, why wouldn't it be posted in State and National Politics? I think you have it the other way around. But then again, WTF do I know?

this has disaster written all over it for the G5 schools and many programs just surviving in the P5. Possibly, but maybe not. It will certainly change the way recruiting is done. Many P5 schools recruit ridiculous numbers of running backs. The thinking is that the best athlete of non-lineman size on any High School team will be the running back. After recruitment the P5 program will then turn the former running backs into Safetys and Corners and whatever the team needs. The California law allows players to make money from their name and likeness. With the law in place a G5 coach has a leg up on recruitment because he can promise to let the High School star play as a running back, which is a more marketable position than a corner position which the P5 school would make him play. The more concerning issue for me is the introduction of student-athletes being represented by agents. Are NCAA players going to start holding out if they don't get what they believe to a an appropriate amount of playing time or touches? Also, what is the presence of well payed superstar on the team going to do to team chemistry among peers who can't make that kind of money? In those aspects it is possible the P5 schools will have it worse than the G5 schools. It will be interesting to see the way this plays out.

Yup, a total nightmare... Why are these ladies smiling? Have they just recently been laid-off after working on the bullet train to nowhere and are now collecting unemployment benefits as they soak up the sun? Or are they recent transplants from the mid-west and claiming "Independent" status as we subsidize their education and medical care as they enjoy CA weather? Or perhaps they are children of liberal politicians and are going to expensive private schools as their parents push Unionized public school on the rest of California's parents?

Maybe. ...Or maybe Victor Davis Hanson is painting a word picture of what he sees, when he looks out his window, from his house, located just outside Fresno. Mental note to self: don't move to Fresno.
