Their Pythagorean record is a grisly 35–43; they have the fourth-fewest runs scored in the National League; and both their rotation and bullpen lack depth. Manny Machado finally getting hot after a slow start could help turn things around, but it may already be too late for a San Diego team that has more of a 2020 and beyond feel to it.

The pitching isn’t there for a WC run and I don’t think the Pads are going to trade for any. Too bad, they actually have some spare parts which could rent a decent SP or two.
I also think it’s a mistake to generally assume that next year everything is going to fall into place. Injuries happen, especially to SP’s. I’ve seen other teams play this game (Reds, White Sox, Rangers) only to get banged up and not be relevant after all.

Wisler traded to the Mariners for $$$. I would think this that this does nothing more than open a roster spot for Lamet.

Those teams don't have anywhere near the farm system depth or talent. Well, the pitchers from the farm system are getting routinely roughed up. The widow, if there ever was one is now gone....another season of sub .500 futility coming up. |

The pitchers most likely to be involved in next year and 2021 are all performing well, outside of perhaps Morejon with the injuries. |

Strahm, Margevicious, Allen got hit pretty good, Wieck has not been effective, Maton, Stammen.
After a pretty decent start of the season, the Padres Pitching staff has come back to earth with a 4.65 ERA.
There have been some good signs from, Luchessi, Paddock, Lamet and Lauer have had some good performances. I am maintaining that the staff has needed a veteran presence since the season began, the Pads are experiencing losing streaks due to the starters getting out pitched. That’s all.

Their "veteran presence", Garrett Richards, won't be pitching until next season (allegedly). Strahm needs to go back to the bullpen, IMO. Margevicius is back in AA, Allen has too small of a sample size, Wieck is back in AAA, Maton is also back in AAA. I don't know what is wrong with Stammen this year--is he injured? Used in the wrong situations? I don't think Andy Green knows (and Green is another problem, IMO). Now I am not saying the Padres couldn't use another starter, but I don't know if they would trade prospects to get one, or go the FA route next season. This is, I think, a transitional year. The FO didn't expect the team to be good this year, but they do expect to see some improvement, and there has been some improvement, especially on offense. This is more a season where the pitchers are out there trying to get stretched out a bit. There have been flashes of brilliance, but it's just not consistent. Plus, I think some of those young starters are going to get shut down in September. But, I have decided to give the club another chance, as for the first time in 4 seasons, I will be buying season seats next year. |

So far the only trade rumors I've seen lately involving the Padres has been trading away Kirby Yates (Minnesota Twins have supposedly been checking him and Blue Jays closer Ken Giles out) and trading for Blue Jays P Marcus Stroman
