Did he really do that much at SDSU to warrant a retired jersey? He was here for only two years. I think retired jerseys should be for those who accomplish more like; top 10 in scoring, wins, etc... I think four year players at the very least. Sorry, while I do like to see players spend 4 years in college Kawhi left because he was ready for the next step despite not having all his skillset fully developed. He has become a superstar at the next level since leaving. Having a Kawhi night where we retire his jersey and show him how much we appreciate what he did for the BB team, reward him for his loyalty to the staff and program is good for the program. If we haven't done so already, I would vote to retire the jerseys of Tony Gwynn (baseball) and Marshal Faulk as well. Two are already in their respective HOF and Kawhi will be the next Aztec to be so enshrined.

Assuming he cashes this latest opportunity in, or any subsequent one...
Yes. Absolutely.
I'd say he's earned when you add up his accomplishments both here and in the NBA. Remember, we didn't ever even have a March Madness W under our belt til they took out N. Colorado. That fact alone merited a huge sigh of relief when that happened in Tucson. Nowadays, if we beat a N. Colorado in the opening round it would merit barely a "That's nice" out of the Aztec faithful. But when you double it up with the Temple W for the Sweet 16 berth, plus the win streak, the way high poll rankings, the buzz, the coast to coast recognition...
Then you throw in at least 2 NBA titles and a probability of 2 Finals MVPs...
Put him in the Viejas rafters. Deserved.

I'd put Billy White ahead of KL, for example. others?

Kawhi's number should absolutely be retired IMO. He brought us our best season in history and a #4 ranking at one point. First Sweet Sixteen, 2nd team all American, etc. He was the best player on our best team of all time, and now he's crushing it as a pro

Going by this logic, Todd Santos would be our only retired number in FB as Marshall Faulk, Haven Moses, and Willie Buchanon didn’t play four years.

Too soon.
The University should let KL’s professional career play out before they honor him like this.

KL's professional career is not part of his sdsu career. what he does as a pro should have no bearing on whether or not his number is retired. it's what he did at state. and as great as he was for sdsu, I'm still not convinced that 2 years was enough to retire his number. go raptors!

The only reason this is a topic right now is because Leonard is on the cusp of an NBA title. SDSU is usually pretty good in honoring the greats, it will happen when it happens.

I think four year players at the very least. I understand your thinking wileyaztec, but yes Kawhi Leonard did more here for the Aztecs than many players have done in four years! He helped the Aztec to 59 wins in just 2 seasons. More than ever before. He lead the Aztecs in his two years in scoring average, rebounds, and assists. Kawhi helped us beat Gonzaga in the early 2010-11 season on their floor, 79-76, where almost no one ever wins. He helped us to a 20 game win streak to start the season & #4 ranking in the college Top 25 (we have never been there before or since!). He also helped lead us to our first victories in NCAA Tournament play, and a Sweet Sixteen birth in 2011. First time ever! He also helped us beat Utah three times that season (twice in conference & in the MW Tournament) We had never done that before! He was also named an All American for the 2010-2011 season! That's just a little of what he has done for the Aztecs! I believe it is more than enough to consider retiring his jersey even without the things he has accomplished in the NBA.

In two years they were 59-12, 34-3 before he left to the NBA. Yes, I agree put #15 up in Viejas and the Jam Center to give him respect and remind recruits and the opposition that Kawhi Leonard is an AZTEC 4 LIFE. Not to mention Top 5 ranking and first sweet 16 appearance ever! To be exact, we reached as high as a #4 ranking when Kawhi was here. I wish we could return to those heights. That was the peak of the Fisher years.

Results he lead the team to its best season - now is helping getting the pub it needs to help recruit - something that Aztecs need if we hope to continue to build the program
What could it hurt and there could be numerous benefits that could come from it
So please move forward on doing it as soon as possible

I was at the Del Mar fair on Friday and saw 3 people with SDSU Kawhi jersey's on. Plus what seemed like more SDSU gear as well and I spoke with some of them and they got a bunch of "Go Aztecs" and "Go Kawhi" for wearing those jerseys. He for sure is bringing more attention to our school. Build that statue!

Will retiring his number now do anything to bring in or land recruits (honest question)? If we had a night where a bunch of recruits were in the house and he was able to make it down would that do anything to sway them? If so, then yeah lets do it; unless we feel that his star might burn brighter in years to come and waiting would prove more advantageous.

Who knows what a particular recruit is thinking.

it is not going to hurt and if even one recruit says something or helps him make decision to play here then it is well worth it
Would guess the coaches will say something positive about it also while recruits are here or it is shown in the back ground - could use as much positive things as we have -
do not see the harm

I'd like to see SDSU retire Kawhi's number... simply for the sake of honoring Kawhi and his accomplishments (while at SDSU and professionally).
Incorporating it into a particular recruiting visit pretty much says... "Kawhi, you are nothing more than a piece of meat to us.".
The man deserves to be honored. Period.
