Joey Cantillo was drafted in the 16th round in 2017 out of a HS in Hawaii. Last season as an 18 year old he was the Unanimous pick for the Padres Pitcher of the year in the Arizona instructional league over 2018 1st round pick Ryan Weathers who is a day older than Joey. He turned 19 last December. He is playing in low A ball for Fort Wayne. He is 3 years below league average. Last 4 starts21.1 Innings 25 Ks 11 hits 5 Walks 0.75 WHIP 2 runs 0.84 ERA Ryan Weathers is better known and is ripping at Fort Wayne too: 1.98 ERA with a 34/3 K/Walk ratio and a WHIP right around 1.

Why has Weathers not gone past the 3rd inning in either of his last 2 starts?

I suspect he got injured in the first start and was working his Innings back up in the second start.

Weathers had a biceps strain and was sat as a precaution. He's been on a pitch count since his return, but he was 94-95 in the first inning a few days ago. They will be cautious with that entire staff. Padres 5 of the 6 youngest starters in the league.

Even guys like Efrain Contreras in Fort Wayne as well. Osvaldo Hernandez hasn't even thrown a pitch yet this season for Lake Elsinore. Michel Baez just came back for Amarillo recently.

Hopefully Joey can add some velocity. He is the classic guy who will do well at the lower levels, but likely struggle beyond that due to lack of stuff.

Do the Pads have players named Joey Cantillo AND Joey Castillo? Or are they the same guy with his name occasionally mis-spelled?
TIA!

Today 5 INNINGS 1 hit 0 walks 0 runs 4 Ks I actually like his last start better, when he threw 79 pitches through 6 innings. Today, he went 5, but only threw 50 pitches.

There is plenty of time. No need to rush. He only threw 49 innings last season. I am sure they don't want him over 100 this season.
