How many 5* players are those non-P5 schools that you mentioned above signing?...or 4*s for that matter. Are the Fresno's of the world trying to sign player like Jaden or Boogie?...or are they just going "all-in" on transfers...(although the corollary to that statement is UNLV signing McCoy)... Gonzaga (WCC) is in a different stratosphere with regards to small conference schools on a national level so they are definitely an outlier (I can't think of any other mid-major school that has had the same type of success year after year...although Butler, Davidson, Memphis, Cincy, and Houston have all have some success in spurts) It's likely both. The Fresno's of the world are all-in on transfers but on occasion will sign players out of high school. UCSB now has four players with 4* ratings on their roster thanks to Miles Norris transferring our way. One hs signee (Amadou Sow, 4* on ESPN) and three transfers. A few random thoughts... Of course schools like Fresno will recruit and sign high school players...but are they really recruiting top 25 talent like Jaden and Boogie?...or are they satisfied with 3* high school players and better transfer looking for more playing time? As far as Amadou Sow is concerned...he was a 20 year-old freshman who appears to be a 3* and was ranked 223 in the country...UCSB won over Colorado and Illinois (2 - P6 schools)...at the time, Colorado had 7 other forwards on their team and Illinois had 6...at UCSB, Sow got to play significant minutes which could be the biggest factor...plus a degree from UCSB is a pretty good accomplishment...he was a very good get for the Gauchos. The Gauchos appear to have 4 former 4* players...all transfers (3 from P6 schools - 1 from UNR)... Lastly...why do you continuously post UCSB information / updates on the SDSU fan board?...doesn't UCSB have their own board?...do you also regularly post UCSB information / updates to other boards as well? Not saying that you aren't entitled to your own opinion (you do post some interesting information in a mostly respectful way)...but just curious as to what prompts you to post here

Not actively recruiting the 4* and up as prepsters. To answer your questions. 1. I post here mostly attempting to convince you kind folks that conference affiliation is a bit overblown in recruiting - it ain't hurting us lately. 1A. I am interested to see how recruiting is affected for us all when UCSD goes Division 1. At the very least they should hold their own right off the bat vs Fresno, Air Force, SJSU and Wyoming. 2. Yes, we have our own board. But I like dropping into AM occasionally. 3. Yes, I frequently post on the MWCBoard.

The inability to heap "Miller type" ca$h upon potential recruits and continue the "flow" as long as they play! JMO

I think that coaches need to do a better job in the targeting of potential recruits. The main recruiting resources, time and $$, are limited. If our coaches spend too much of either chasing pie in the sky recruits (Boogie, McDaniels, Leaf, McCoy, Collins, Hand) many of the less heralded but talented players will have committed elsewhere by the time the coaches refocus on other players. As an example, the coaching staff prioritized the Mensahs and were able to sign both. If we carry multiple scholarships into the late spring and summer we are dealing with a more shallow talent pool. We can’t count on getting quality late season adds every year. Sure we got Mitchell but we also ended up with Chang. You aren’t going to find a diamond in the rough with an unfillled scholarship. I’m hopeful that the coaching staff can get it done in 2020 but having a major hole in the coaching staff isn’t going to help. With the reported 100’s of talented coaching applicants sitting on Dutcher’s desk I hope that he can make a move soon.

Would venture to say that we for the most part- as suggested in the newspaper a while back- try to recruit the "under the radar guys " with the hope of a high ceiling - already realize top 25 recruits are primarily heading to the P5 schools . We went after some of the local guys with hope they would stay here but knew we were maybe a final 5 choice IF they wanted to stay local . Does not really happen that often here . Jaden was a brother of Jalen so had hopes . If not for Jalen little if any chance . Tough to beat the P5 schools. Very unlikely we are going to sign a top 25 HS recruit .
thought some one had connection to both Joel M and Nathan M is how we landed them .
Are we going forward- trying to get more transfers from regular , to JC to grad rather then the wait for HS guys that may take time to develop - Is there the time for guys to develop for the coaches and players ? We got Malachi because he knew we had no guards for 2019 .
Recruiting is incredibly difficult battle that coaches really want to be able to go out there and be able to Sell to possible recruits . Can Dutcher and the staff still do it . or are other coaches even in the MW and other places passing us - be realistic with opinions . Losing Coach Hut was major blow and Tony B .
Dutcher is a great guy , loves the we are Aztec family thoughts and his players But what is really needed for us to be able to out recruit other schools . It Is a Recruiting war out there . So you need a coach or two that loves the battle and can come out a winner
What will strategy be for 2020 and going forward ? Recruits do not have a long memory so what we did 5- 10 years ago does not sell today . Yes K.L - or the Fab 5 was a long time ago or maybe we should have gone after coach J Howard few years ago .
What do we see as having a successful season ? .

You either need to be a big name program or have a big name coach. We have neither so we need to get back to what made us successful getting talented transfers and overlooked kids that don’t fit a position.

Just a fact, that although Dutch was with Fisher all that time, and was instrumental in the recruiting from the Fab Five to current day, the Fisher name had cache. Whereas the Dutcher name does not. Dutch has to create his own identity and path forward. The name Fisher does nothing for him any longer.

There are some clueless people here. It is all about the money paid to the player under the table.
Many coaches are paid with the understanding they will share with the players.
We do not have enough money to keep our assistant coaches.

But, what you are saying seems like a can of worms. From my clueless perspective, which stems from articles read mostly, is that the shoe companies are largely behind the payola issue, and that the head coaches are kept far away from any of that stuff so that they can later plead ignorance. The assistants (Tony Bland for instance) are the guys out there in the recruiting trenches with the envelopes of cash, correct? You are saying that AD's are hiring coaches with the understanding that their salary is to be shared with recruits...interesting, very interesting.

Coach Dutcher and the Aztecs just need to keep on doing what they are doing. Over the past 25 years I have seen Gonzaga ascend into near blue blood status, they are always in the top 25 every year and seem to have success landing blue chip recruits. The Aztecs are on a similar trajectory and sooner or later the top 25 recruits will find their way onto Montezuma Mesa.

recruits do not just Find there way to a school - say SDSU - you have to really work on having a staff that can sell them on your school . Zags have been winners and guys want to go where there is success - in todays world you better know how to recruit - judge talent and be able to convince them that SDSU is a place for them . We have not been winning lately or have the sizzle to sell them .
Better be able to get a coach that Appeals to todays recruits . recruits want to play and win .

Gotcha...I'm familiar with this article. Your second sentence of "Many coaches are paid with the understanding that they will share with the players..." that caught my attention.
