Well it was "Boogie Fever", but the fever broke and it's back to the reality of trying to use that 1 scholarship!

Inability to close the deals without large cash payments. True, a Nike or Adidas "shoe box" containing nothing but some cool new kicks can be had at any P5/G5 school, but the boxes lined with green paper are the deal closers! JMO GO AZTECS!! |

I think the biggest impediment is the fact that teenagers have such short memories. A couple of good, season long, runs and the Aztecs will be back in business. If we see some serious player development this year and the coaches deliver in the 2020 recruiting class the Aztecs will have positioned themselves nicely.

P5 vs G5- never going to be a fair fight:
How is SDSU ever going to be able to compete with P5 programs? Please remember that SDSU was put on 2 year probation and lost a few scholarships for what the NCAA deemed as a "Major Case" investigation for Illegal "beach workouts" and free t-shirts and hats. Compare this to just what has happened in the last year couple years and it goes to show what SDSU is up against.
1)Adidas/Nike payoff scandal- (ongoing)
2)Penn State- (need I say more)
3)Mich. State- Gymnastics, football, domestic violence
4)NC State- make believe classes
5)Enrollment scandal- (ongoing)

.
This just goes to show what BigTime programs can do with BigTime money in the manipulation of the NCAA. You have to wonder what is being done during recruiting of 18-19 year olds.

Don't mean to nitpick...but I think it was UNC that had "ghost" classes not NC State...and the NCAA basically said it was okay since any student could theoretically sign-up for that class...not only athletes...no harm / no foul Add to your list... 6) Baylor - multiple football player rapes 7) Louisville - hiring prostitutes for recruits 8) Florida State - Professors giving football player exam answers before the exam 9) USC - Pay for play (OJ Mayo & Reggie Bush...and now more recently) |

so how would you compare Aztecs recruiting now compared to Fresno , Nevada, Lobos , UNLV , USU , ... USD or similar WCC schools plus the AAC schools ? AAC has made the positive move up in the conferences
MW does hurt but also need the coaches that players want to play for . Guys that can sell the program . Answers ask the guys/recruits who have recently turned us down or not even given us the opportunity.

Are the Fresno's of the world trying to sign player like Jaden or Boogie?...or are they just going "all-in" on transfers...(although the corollary to that statement is UNLV signing McCoy)... Gonzaga (WCC) is in a different stratosphere with regards to small conference schools on a national level so they are definitely an outlier (I can't think of any other mid-major school that has had the same type of success year after year...although Butler, Davidson, Memphis, Cincy, and Houston have all have some success in spurts) |

Don't forget Gonzaga has a large network of Jesuit priests etc. that find talent in their local areas. Few gets a lot of tips on players we never hear of until they become Zags, free scouts, what a great idea.

would say we need to go by what schools are doing in the last 1 to maybe 3 years . Little doubt losing to P5 schools is going to happen when recruits are highly rated .
We used to be able to recruit guys that were seen as under the radar but high ceiling as they develop 2 to 4 years , but now not sure there is the time to have them develop so going to transfers , or you better be a better judge of talent
MW has for the most part turned into getting a variety of transfers - regular , grad and JC and players from other countries . Does seem lately that even some of the better MW schools are able to out recruit us for those transfers now . Nevada, Lobos, Fresno , .... . Would say losing Coach Hut has really hurt us - plus maybe Tim Shelton. Rather then guess what type of coach can help SDSU the most ask the guys being recruited what they are looking for in a coach or program .
Do think the AAC schools have been getting coaches who appeal to the recruits and they are a nation wide conference . Like it or not we are very regional conference not much appeal and not performed well in MM . Winning during the season and especially in MM counts .plus conference exposure .
Understand Dutcher sells the family idea but bottom line - need to have a coach that can really relate and recruit to all parts of the country . Guys do want to be appreciated and but think winning can as important . Can not come up short in games we should win and in MM
Bottom line need to be able to evaluate talent and able to sign them . Recruiting can be even more important that the X's and O's.

Winning. The biggest obstacle is the inconsistent play on the court. When we were averaging mid to upper 20s win seasons, Recruiting was on the uptick. We’ve been lucky to hit 20 wins the past couple seasons and we’re seeing what that can bring in. I think we need to get back to you going after those guys that are being undervalued in the rankings systems, guys who will play with a chip on their shoulder, high three-star/ low four star guys...

would guess that we have been going after the "under the radar guys with high ceiling " rather then the highly rated HS guys that we know we can not sign . Also seems we are going after variety of transfers route more then HS guys going forward . Need to have coaches that can really recruit .
not changing conferences though would not mind getting into AAC and getting major donors
Time to stop making excuses for losing games to Brown , CAL , USD , .... and produce on the court and get wins in MM .

Retirement of Coach Fish and losing Bland and Hut.
Dutch needs to a high profile, nationally recognized Asst Head Coach. He should have 100 resumes on his desk and find a top notch recruiter with a track record. Rod Palmer didnt buy us much in So Cal.
Expand recruiting, the life blood of all programs. Fish won 340 games here at SDSU, we shouldn't be lsoing guys to Cal, Utah, Oregon St and Fresno St.

The Fresno's of the world are all-in on transfers but on occasion will sign players out of high school. UCSB now has four players with 4* ratings on their roster thanks to Miles Norris transferring our way. One hs signee (Amadou Sow, 4* on ESPN) and three transfers. |
