I don't even really want to talk about it, but fastball command was spotty. Amarillo is a really brutal park. One of the home runs was a foul ball. But, it was his worst start as a pro. Moving on. Just another park at elevation, just like all 4 teams in the Pacific Southern division of the PCL.

Tonight, Gore uncharacteristically wild. 93 pitches, 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R (all earned), 4 BB and 6 K.
Trammell singles in the bottom of the 6th, sandwiched around 3 K's. Sod Poodles lose 5-2.

With the unveiling of the ZiPS projections, I found this nugget interesting. MacKenzie Gore is projected for 1.6 fWAR in 92 innings at the MLB level. As a comparison, Clayton Kershaw's rookie year in 107.2 innings : 1.3. Gore's ceiling is massive.

I'm also wondering how he will handle the MLB baseball, versus the AA and lower ball he has used so far in his career.

But with his age and limited AA exposure, I bet they wait until maybe June.

With most of the big name starter FA already signed, the Padres could promote Gore sooner rather than later.

I wonder if Preller explores signing him super early, like the Braves did with Acuna and 1 or 2 others. Pure speculation of course, just curious if that may be a trend for some teams with future stars.

Pure speculation of course, just curious if that may be a trend for some teams with future stars. Both the Acuña and Albies deals were negotiated by the same agent who basically sacrificed MAJOR future market value. I don't think those deals are typical of anything, unfortunately. Extend Tatis first. And it will not be cheap.

FanGraphs came out with their top 100 today, Gore is #3. Here is a portion of the writeup on him, which is the stuff of legend. FG put a 70 future value on him.
"Gore generated a 16% swinging strike rate overall last year and a 15% swinging strike rate on his fastball, which is amazing for a heater that only averaged 93 mph. Several other traits — Gore generates nearly perfect backspin and seam uniformity on his fastballs, which you can see in the video that corresponds to this player capsule, and the flat approach angle of his stuff contributes, too — help the fastball play up, including Gore’s command which projects, at least, to plus. Spin efficiency also enables his curveball to be good even though it lacks big raw spin, he has glove-side command of his slider, and his changeups, though they’re of mixed quality, are typically well-located. You can go wild projecting on Gore’s secondary stuff, especially the changeup, and his command because he is such an exceptional athlete, and the fact that he can repeat and maintain such an odd and explosive delivery is clear evidence of that."

First live BP today. Threw to Mejia, Pham (who never swung) and Torrens.

Debuted against 3 MLB hitters today and retired them all on 8 pitches. Fastball was 94-95, a couple nice offspeed offerings as well. Can't wait to see the next outing.

Second appearance, kind of shakey. He walked the bases full, shook off Hedges 2-2 count, tossed up a hanger which got smacked over the center fielder for a 3 run double.
There is no questioning this kid’s stuff, his fastball has a nice late hop and gets to the catchers mitt quick. He should probably start the season in AA.

And yet if Hedges doesn't drop strike 3....would have been a much different ending. Weather was awful. Definitely had zero feel for the offspeed stuff. He'll be fine.
