Ok, stupid question. What exactly is a "preferred" walk-on?

Ok, stupid question. What exactly is a "preferred" walk-on? In some instances, a college coach or recruiter may designate an athlete as a "preferred walk-on" during the scouting process. In this situation, the athlete is assured a spot on the team, but the coach is unable or unwilling to offer a scholarship.

I'm trying to think of recent preferred walk ons and their ultimate contributions to the program. Aqeel Quinn and Ben Perez are two walk ons I am remembering, but I don't recall if they were "preferred". Does anybody know Michael Pope's game? I did a quick google search under "Michael Pope Torrey Pines recruiting" and it doesn't look like he had any offers. He has a twin, Bryce, who has committed to UCSD.

It may be that he is fine paying for a year if it gives SDSU the chance to use the other scholarships for recruiting. UNC did it with Luke Maye, and after a few seniors left after his freshman year, he went on scholarship. It's a useful recruiting capability. Definitely not a stupid question, as we don't see it all that often.

Beat out Boogie the Dukie for POY and had NO scholarship offers? Must be another way, way "under the radar" recruit.

Great additon. We need depth at Guard and to get a quality player as a walk-on is huge.

I also see it as a great addition. He's 6'3", 185 coming into school so he's already physically solid. I've seen him play a half-dozen times over the past three years and always liked his game. He's a very good shooter, 45% 3-pt his Senior year, and money at the foul line, 93%!! But most of all I like the way he plays on the floor. Like the majority of kids coming out of the Torrey Pines program, he has very good court sense and a high basketball IQ.
They share the ball there a lot. If he was in a different program, he could have easily averaged in the high 20s and be rated higher and a bigger deal if we got him. I'm stoked.

Wouldn't two Popes be better than one?
Did anyone see white smoke emanating from the Aztec Athletic office chimney when this was announced?
