Caesars Palace has the 2019 win total for the Padres at 77 1/2. As things stand at the moment, I would take the under.

Well, shoot. The Padres haven't won more than 77 games even once in the last seven seasons, their highest total being exactly 77 in 2014. So if I were to take action here, I would bet the under as well. This team still has serious question marks in the rotation and in the lineup. I reserve the right to change my mind if they pull off a couple of big trades before opening day.

At this point I have to go with the under.

I am disappointed by that. If it was somewhat lower, I would take the over. The Padres have a good chance of having a very good starting pitching staff. Lauer and Lucchesi are good and the two rookies, Allen and Paddack, are very exciting. That and adding an Ace, the staff could be surprisingly good.

That high an over under is also a reflection of how weak the West will be this year. If the Padres are close they will likely be adding Talent at the trading deadline. The difference between buying and selling at that point can reflect heavily in the final results and is muchly dependent on our opponents results.

However, I lost big time taking the Padres over 71 games last year. Knowing my luck, I will take the under this year and they will win 150.

(not being snarky, just curious)

What made you think the Pads would be over 71 last year? (not being snarky, just curious) Because I thought they couldn't be any worse than the 71 wins in 2017. I believe there were others that thought that as well. Ahhhhh, wrong!!

Just thought it was time to dust this one off.

Currently, the Padres are 68-81. They need to go 10-3 to finish over the total (77.5). They need to go 5-8 to keep from losing 90 games for the 4th straight season.

So now, the Padres can't reach the win total posted by Caesars Palace in January of 77.5 (which was posted long before they signed Machado). Now, the only "goal" they have left is to not lose 90 games or more for the 4th straight season--something they haven't done since the first 7 years of the franchise. Since Andy Green was fired, he won't have the chance to set the record for the only Padres manager to lose 90 or more games in 4 consecutive seasons, as he will have to be content to joining Preston Gomez as a co-record holder, with 3 consecutive 90+ loss seasons each.

May win 2 of the 6 games remaining.

Securing a top ten pick at this point is the priority.

Securing a top ten pick at this point is the priority. Then they better completely fold now, as they are tied for 10th with the Angels.

Truth. Had they lost yesterday, could have been 9th. But need a protected pick at this point.

The Padres finish 70-92. After 90 games, they were 45-45. Then to finish the season, they went 25-47. The Padres have serious decisions to make this off-season.
And, depending on what Clolrado does, the Padres have the chance to finish in last place in the NL West all by themselves--the 3rd day all season that the Padres will have been in last place.
EDIT: The collapse is complete. The Rockies won in 13 innings, leaving the Padres alone in last in the NL West.

Now drafting one place ahead of the Rockies.
