Considering what the Yankees asked for Gray, I'm glad they've held off on the insanity. Prices will come down as we get further into the process. Arizona and San Francisco both have plans to shop their pitchers at the deadline, which is a definite risk.

As I have stated before, I have ZERO confidence in any Padre starting pitching prospects. I really hope they bring in someone. A rotation with Luchessi, Lauer, Perdomo, Lamet, Richards, Mitchell, Strahm will probably usher in another pathetic 95 loss season.

Richards isn't pitching in 2019, unless you are referring to Clayton Richard. I don't think they will lose 95 games, but I don't think they will get to .500--not with their current roster.

Why? In the 50 years the Padres have been promoting starting pitchers into their starting rotation from their minor league system, only 6 of them (Jones, Hawkins, Benes, Peavy, Show, Ross) have pitched at close to an all star level at some point in their careers with the Padres. The way I look at it is if there have been 600 starting pitchers (12 avg. per year for 50 seasons, just a rough estimate) total promoted to the majors in the 50 year history of the Padres and only 6 of them have been decent, that’s one pitcher (not HOF mind you just decent to good) for every one hundred promotions. Honestly, it doesn’t seem to matter who the GM or manager is, the success rate has been fairly consistent throughout the club’s history. Apply this rate to the current staff (Perdomo, Lauer, Lamet, Luchessi, Strahm, Erlin, Mitchell) and you can see where this is heading. I suppose one could speculate that this farm system is way overdue, however I do not share AJ Prellers optimism with this bunch. Success in baseball is built from starting pitching and while bullpens are important, they won’t win games if you are trailing 8-2 going into the 7th inning. This current staff needs a decent #1 starter and another veteran who can give the Padres 170 innings of sub 4.00 ERA pitching for this team to be competitive next season. Fill in the rest of the staff with Lamet/Lauer/Luchessi or whoever. Two veteran SP’s will make a huge difference and provide some leadership for the 1st and 2nd year starters. Staying the course with the current guys will probably yield a similar result to the past 2 seasons. Just one fan’s opinion.

Just sayin.
