Padres 4th ranked prospect. 2nd baseman, plus defender, elite bat to ball skills. Promoted at the ripe age of 21 from El Paso. This is the first impact position player to be promoted.

You mean Margot wasn’t?

Margot wasn't recalled this year. I should have clarified THIS season. I think big things are in store for Luis. Won't be a huge home run threat, but a lifetime .397 on base average is just what this team needs.

Urias has struck out more times this year than the last two seasons combined, with hope of tapping into more power. His ISO has nearly doubled this season, so it has definitely increased his exit velocity on batted balls. He was still in the top 5 in walks in the PCL, being the youngest qualified hitter in the league by a wide margin. Also, seems like the Padres will give him some reps at shortstop, which he can fill in and be fine there, too.

Luis has had a hot August. In 102 PA:
BA .420 OBP .480 SLG .659 OPS 1.139 HBP 4
Luis has 11 HBP. Christian Villanueva leads the Padres with 9 HBP. It helps OBP.
He has a current 15 game hitting streak.

Urías, who turned 21 in June, hit .296/.398/.447 this season with Triple-A El Paso. He has not gotten on base at lower than a .381 clip in any of his five years in professional baseball. Across the same span, the Padres have continuously ranked last in the National League in OBP. They will enter Tuesday’s series opener with a .298 mark, a one-point drop from 2017.
So, why did it take this long for Urías to be called up?
One, the Padres are slogging toward their first 100-loss season since 1993; given Urías’ youth and the current state of the big-league club, the organization did not feel the need to hasten a promotion. And two, only recently has Urías proven that he has nothing left to prove against Pacific Coast League pitchers.
After posting some uncharacteristic strikeout rates earlier in the season, Urías slashed .420/.480/.659 in August. He leaves El Paso on a 15-game hitting streak, having recorded multiple knocks in eight of those games.
“He got bigger and more home-run happy,” said an American League scout who saw Urías during the first half of the season. “Looks like he’s made some adjustment lately. Big ‘K’ numbers [were] unlike him.”

0-3 with a walk in his first big league game. Hopefully this will someday be the answer to a trivia question.

Urias has all the tools to be a solid major leaguer, but in the article I was reading on theAthletic.com, one scout stated "he's not a savior" and not considered to be an elite prospect on the level of say, a Tatis or Vlad Guerrero Jr. Which is fine. If everyone has their expectations tempered that he may be more Quilvio Veras than a prime Roberto Alomar, Jr. And hey, "Q" had a damned fine career!

Could easily have had 2 hits last night and that play on defense was incredible. I don't think he is going to be a superstar, which is silly because I think the line between really good player and superstar is blurry in a lot of cases. If he wins a batting title or two, I think most take that outcome and run.

Legitimately angry right now because Urias gets his first hit, but his first home run is overturned on review when it was called fair on the field. The ball hit the foul pole. Gross.

Can't complain with a 3-5 day. Kid is as advertised so far through 2 good games.

It's unfortunate to see them not be able to get a call right, especially when it takes that long. Doesn't take away from the shine of the kid, though. I love the way he just takes borderline pitches and watches them go by. The double he hit was smoked, the defense is as advertised and he's just the beginning of the movement. Looking forward to a 20 year old Tatis forming a double play combo with a 22 year old (June 3rd) Urias.

Thankfully it's just a hammy and not something that might keep him out for next year too like Manaea's injury/surgery :-(
