I sent my comments to Padres front office and got this response. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, and for your continued support of the San Diego Padres. As you mentioned, we set forth a plan in 2016 to build a championship-caliber team from within. We are certainly not happy about our current record, but we have been honest with our fans that 2018 would be another year of valuable development for our young core group of players. Our staff is dedicated to coaching them up to see marked improvement to the point that they become consistent and productive big-league players. We believe the future is very bright in San Diego, especially because the Padres were named the No. 1 minor league system entering the 2018 season. With that said, your comments have been forwarded to the appropriate parties for their awareness. We hope that you will continue to be with us as we continue with this plan and towards our ultimate goal of bringing a World Series Championship to San Diego. While they are not happy with what's happening this year, there was no mention of giving some discounts for the rest of the home games this season. However, they said they are going to forward this message. So maybe something will happen. Anything would be nice and help with fan relationships. Clearly the Padres are 2-3 years away from anything right now. With the current roster, next year maybe .500, after that who knows? The fact that most of their core young players get hurt and miss significant playing time augers poorly. It’s not just one guy, it’s pretty much everyone. Urias hobbling off after 52 ab’s encapsulates this perfectly. I’ve seen this process play out a few other times at Petco, in 5 years we will be having the same conversation as the winning window for this current group comes and goes.

What a silly narrative.

What is silly are pitchers who can’t throw 100 innings without going down with some kind of strained whatever. The recent “build from within” success stories usually don’t have the litany of DL stints that the Padres have. You can’t win if your top players can’t stay healthy.

What pitchers are you referring to? Because we are hardly alone in that category?

And we STILL have to win one more game...

Not going to lose 100 games. Save the effort.

What pitchers are you referring to? Because we are hardly alone in that category? Perdomo, Lyles, Mitchell, Strahm, Lamet, Lockett. If the Padres are going to have eyes on a playoff run, they need starters who can stay healthy. It is no coincidence that the 5 teams with the best records (Red Sox, Yankees, Astros, Indians, Cubs) all have 3 or 4 starters at 150 innings or better. The Indians in particular have 4 starters over 160, with 200 k’s. The Padres are missing something in player development or selection, starters who throw 3 or 4 starts and are subsequently shelved indicate there is something not quite right. That’s a fact, don’t hate the messenger.

Not going to lose 100 games. Save the effort. When they win their 63rd game, I'll stop.

That’s a fact, don’t hate the messenger. Perdomo is a non-factor. He will be DFA'd I'm sure in the offseason. Lyles is gone as of two months ago. Mitchell, sure. Strahm? He's been healthy all year. Lockett is nothing more than AAA filler/depth. These "facts" don't include one pitcher outside of Strahm who will even be in the picture going forward, barring significant leniency to Mitchell. Your facts don't relay the information that those teams aren't in rebuilds, which changes their organizational philosophy and how pitchers are managed. This year was always going to be about giving guys in the minors looks to see what will happen next year. That alone means you're not going to get guys throwing 150 innings or whatever number you want to use.

Meanwhile, the 3rd and 5th draft picks are separated by half a game right now.

Colorado is a half a game back and tied in the loss column. Milwaukee's half a game back of Chicago tied in the win column. That puts Colorado in a much better position. Colorado gets to try and win a game to tie while Milwaukee hopes Chicago loses a game to tie.

I'm more interested in the (small) possibility that LA has a total meltdown and doesn't make the playoffs at all - that would make this debacle of a season palatable.

Padres after winning last night, with everyone losing around them, are 1.5 games out of the 3rd pick status. Could fall as far as 8.

Dodgers could win 2 out of 3 in San Francisco and still not make the playoffs. So no meltdown is necessary. Two Reasons to root for the Cardinals this weekend. 1. To knock the Dodgers out of the playoffs. 2. So Milwaukee will finish ahead of the Cubs.

Perhaps meltdown isn't the proper term, but considering they were a 95-99% guarantee to make the playoffs as of last week (not to mention their payroll, free agents pickups, etc.) it should be considered at least a debacle, if not worse.
