Platoon. Hedges needs to be catching less. He takes an absolute beating behind the plate. Only 10 catchers in baseball have amassed 350 AB's. It's a very demanding position that takes a physical toll. I'm surprised Hedges has not had concussion issues yet with the amount of foul balls and backswings to the head he's taken. You have him catch 90/95 games or so, you platoon Mejia accordingly and give his bat a chance to stick. I think you might see an uptick in Hedges offensively if he's subjected to less wear and tear on the other side. If you are talking about letting Hedges play MORE than Mejia (yikes), I hope you mean that you would platoon Mejia accordingly at other positions than just C. ? Top prospects like Mejia need at bats, not sitting 3-4 times a week. If we are talking about end of June Hedges, I agree (.188/.235/.250). Post June Hedges (.275/.321/.506) is quite acceptable for a ++ defensive catcher. Hedges just turned 26 so he should improve on that. Sharing catching and getting all DH opportunities would give each catcher 91 games. Having fresh catchers is a good thing.

Franmil Reyes sleeps, and on a flyball to shallow RF, the D-Backs take the lead in the 12 inning....

And the Gatorade shower at the end. I guess the Pads feel a need to celebrate with extra gusto, due to the infrequent home wins this season.

Just read that, since 2006, the Pads have averaged 91.6 losses per season. Yikes!

Next year will be really interesting. This offseason may be equally such. What moves do they make to ensure they are more competitive going forward? Plenty of pieces to play with. Expect Strahm to be in the rotation next year. What a valuable chip he turned out to be.

I’m wondering, with all the young power arm relievers, whether Yates will be part of the team?

Could easily see him traded in the offseason - Tons of depth in the pen. Closing is more about the mentality than anything else, but plenty of stuff. Munoz will be up by midseason I would think and he would be my choice, currently. But they have options.

I’m wondering, with all the young power arm relievers, whether Yates will be part of the team? Padres #1 bullpen post all-star game, ERA-WISE. Trend in baseball is a less defined role for pitchers. Padres are in a good position to take advantage of that.
