www.sgvtribune.com/2018/08/18/social-media-threat-rumors-cause-panic-at-football-game-at-diamond-bar-high-school/A false rumor of a possible shooter at a high school football game in Diamond Bar spread like wildfire thanks to smartphones, and the crowd panicked and stampeded out of the stadium. CRAZY stuff. Rumors like that used to take hours to circulate before smartphones. And by the time you heard the rumor it had usually been debunked and life went on. In all the years I've been going to high school football games (23 seasons in total), I've never seen anything like this (the worst I've seen was a fight). A former co-worker of mine was there with his wife and daughter, and he had a son on the sidelines (a graduate visiting) and a son in the game. He and his family were pretty freaked out (it took them a couple hours to find where their sons had gone).

Having experienced an active shooter situation, the technology is both a blessing and a curse - Accuracy goes by the wayside to wild rumor and speculation. It's extremely scary not knowing what you're really facing. Unfortunately, the age we live in makes this a concrete reality all too often.
