After Vista thoroughly dominated Hueneme in their home opener, 49-7, last night, one couldn't help but wonder, "Is Vista really this good, or is Hueneme really that bad?"
Vista's offensive line actually looked strong for the first time in years, and their running back corps looked scary good as one back after another had great run after great run. David Flores had one of the most impressive 5 yard TD runs I've ever seen as a defender jumped on his back trying to drive him to the ground at the 4, but Flores just did a fireman's carry and carried the linebacker on his back and shoulders into the end zone! I've never seen that at any level of football.
So is Vista for real? Is Hueneme that bad?
The reality is probably somewhere in the middle as Huneme did have one really good drive to start the 2nd half (they COMPLETELY changed their offensive style and switched from a spread offense to a two tight end, one receiver set and used a couple different running backs substituting in and out as QB). Other than that Hueneme couldn't get anything done against Vista, and the game could have easily been 63-7 if Vista hadn't fumbled a couple snaps away.
I'd say Vista has a chance at a 6-4, maybe even 7-3 regular season record this year. IF they avoid major injuries to any major contributors.
If they don't have a winning record this year I'd say coach Dave Bottom has to go. His Wing T based offense hasn't been at all effective against the better teams in the county to this point, and he still doesn't use the shotgun much (he only used it in one or two games last year, and only a few times in each of those games). He has adjusted his offensive scheme a bit when the Wing T hasn't been effective, but the results have only been marginally better.
This may be a make or break year for Coach Bottom. A losing season would make this Vista's 7th in a row. They hadn't had more than 3 losing seasons in a row in the post 1960's era. They are definitely in uncharted territory for the program (trying to rebuild from a perennial loser).
After week one we KNOW La Costa Canyon is for real. Yet again. If Vista does well and keeps the game close, we'll know they've taken a big step up. If they get blown out? It may be another long season for Panther fans...
