About time he deserves his own thread. Part of the international spending spree of 2016, but his paltry bonus checked in just over 100,000 in comparison to some of the more heralded members of the class. All he's done at the ripe age of 18 (Won't turn 19 until after the season is over) is this....
77 strikeouts in 66+ innings. 2.39 FIP. 14 starts in which he's gone 5 innings and given up zero hits. ERA in his last 10 starts of 1.82 (which is actually almost double what it was just a week ago, thanks to one poor start)
Reports have been exemplary on him from a number of sources - 4 pitch mix with a fastball that sits in the mid 90's and has touched 98/99. Potential plus slider. Potential for an above average to plus curve. Respectable changeup for his age/innings history.
Talked to an evaluator the other day who put #2 starter upside on him. Mound presence and makeup is borderline elite. Should be at the front of an Elsinore rotation in 2019, accompanied by Mackenzie Gore and Anderson Espinoza.

Another outing - More dominance against one of the better offenses in Lansing. 5 2/3, 2 hits (1 being a bunt single that could have been an error) 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Pitched to contact when he had to, had to sit through some long innings. In his last 52 innings, he's given up 10 earned runs. He's still just 18.

I think a word or two might be not what you intended. I found 12 games with at least 5 innings giving up no earned runs over the last 2 seasons, and 2 more with 4 innings. www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=patino000lui

CLEARLY I was not typing well that night. He had 4 starts out of the 14 at that point where he had gone 5 innings and given up zero hits. Pretty impressive for an 18 year old. He's taken over that rotation with the injuries to Mackenzie Gore.

He's really impressive for his age. Mound presence, poise, energy, focus, you name it. A couple starts ago, the defense let him down and the bases were loaded with nobody out. He struck out the side. He seems to embrace challenges. Can't wait to see him challenged next year. Could be AA as a 19 year old in the latter half of the year. Sidenote - The Padres have a kid named Andres Munoz in AA right now, 19 year old relief prospect. He skipped 2 levels to get there. Last night, he struck out the side on 11 pitches, none of them below 100 MPH. Hit 103. I would repeat...he's 19.

Munoz still needs some seasoning in the minors and is coming off injury, so just root for continued good health. Patino goes tonight at 4:35 for his next start. One stat I forgot to include which is also really impressive - Patino is striking out 29.5% of all batters he faces this year and has the highest swinging strike percentage of any teenage prospect in minor league baseball

Trying to get an impartial perspective, so I've tuned into the South Bend radio team. Patino gave up a leadoff single on the first pitch, but got a strikeout/catcher's interference double play and an easy grounder in the first. Per the Cubs radio, he hit 100 MPH on a pitch.

Patino had a shutout going through 5 innings and was rolling. His kryptonite has been the 6th and it got him again, to a very limited degree. Double/sac bunt/sac fly, lost the shutout and is done after 6 with 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 earned run and only 3 hits allowed. He's really, really good. This is the ninth time in his last ten starts he's given up 1 earned run or less.

In related news, introducing Joey Cantillo. Lefty out of Hawaii takes Patino's spot today and while the final line score doesn't look beautiful, he pitched pretty well. 18 year old, 16th rounder out of the 2017 draft. Another upside arm, almost two months YOUNGER than Patino (which is crazy)...The reliever came in behind him and gave up a grand slam.
