Because he hadn't shown any indication that he could be useful as a starter? Then he was traded. Texas tried him as a starter and he was a failure there, too. He wasn't a useful starter until this year, for god's sake.

Today is a good day for fans of the minor league system - Paddack goes for San Antonio, Luis Patino goes for Fort Wayne and Ryan Weathers makes his minor league debut in the desert. Weathers did not do well in his first start. No place to go but up. Nerves in his debut and a long layoff, I'm sure. He'll be alright. Also probably not fun pitching when it's 107 degrees.

....NOBODY saw anything in him until after he pitched for three seasons in Japan. You can't fault an organization for that. By that logic, 29 other teams failed. Nobody gave him after a major league deal.

Ok, you’re right I’m wrong. I know you’re the ultimate Padre honk so I’ll leave it at that. Just wish you felt as strongly about them becoming competitive sooner than later. Right now they’re terrible.

I'm not a Padre honk by any stretch. But I see this team for what it is - Trying to figure out who fits where for a long-term run towards contention. I expected them to be better this season, truth be told. It's disappointing of course, but in any universe, I would take the Padres situation over the Marlins, Royals, Giants, Orioles and a handful of other clubs with barren farm systems, aging veterans and no immediate help on the horizon. This season has been incredibly frustrating with the young players regressing at times and the much documented Hosmer struggles, but I believe in the ceilings of some of the guys in the pipeline. Can the Padres turn that into success, I don't know. We'll see.

Weathers caught a break with the weather tonight. It's only 106 with a double digit wind blowing out as opposed to 107.

Weathers goes 2 perfect innings and lowers his ERA by over 23 runs.

Paddack goes last night and leaves the game with the opposing pitcher throwing a perfect game. He's exceeded his innings total already pretty significantly, so it'll be interesting to see what they do. 5 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts. Reportedly touched 96 several times and 97 a couple times on the gun. Hit 94 in his last inning. K/BB ratio now of 110:7.

Didn't I read somewhere that that ratio in the minors has an unexpectedly high correlation to success.

K/9, H/9, BB/9 and elite control/command are pretty good indications of future success, yes. For the uninitiated, here's a few of Paddack's strikeouts from last night.

Paddack has been shut down by the Padres. 120 strikeouts in 90 innings vs 7 unintentional walks. Can't wait to see his progress with a full and healthy offseason.
