For one, Hemsley. He was arguably our best on ball/screen defender last year & will only mature into more of a stopper around the perimeter. Watson, who was a TERRIBLE defender early, should improve as well with another year and be less of a liability. Mitchell, Schakel (& McD) were FR; they'll be much improved as defenders next year (they were later in the year). Mitchell's goal is to lose weight & be quicker, and he has the court savvy that should make him a decent if not strong defender if he is in better shape than he was last year. Schakel should get stronger, and hopefully won't wear down. He was solid early in the year for a FR (remember him on Maten?). McD, if he returns, will be stronger - much IMO. Seiko, while a rookie, was ahead of all of them defensively IMO last year. Assuming he stays healthy he'll be good once he adjusts to the speed of the live college game. Arop is long, athletic & should become an excellent defender over time. A 7'1 wingspan and a high BBIQ will go a long ways to expediting the learning curve. I also think N Mensah is ahead of the curve defensively for a FR; he's solid physically. We may not be able to replace a Kell, or DA before him, but I also believe we'll have fewer guys like Mitchell/Schakel/McD as freshmen needing to step in, and should evolve earlier in the year. Especially if McD returns. Arop could be a DA eventually (probably not this year), and Schakel could be a Kell defensively (same with Mitchell). We have some very solid athletes. If McD leaves the concern will be size/strength/experience inside, so hopefully we can find a solid defender via the Grad transfer market. If McD returns, I love this team. I thought Mitchell's defense was pretty good for a freshman. He does look to give good effort and he plays with an attitude. As you say, though, quickness is an issue for him. If he can improve that I expect him to a very solid defender. The key 3 words - "for a freshman", which are words which haunted us all year long. As with most FR, he frequently got lost on D and blew help assignments, but his on ball D wasn't bad. He'll get better, especially if he can lose 10 lbs.

Think we could move the D posts or start new one . But tend to agree and was written, that Matt came into fall needing to lose some weight . It allowed him to take it inside on offense but slowed him down on defense and even some on offense . He was able to take charges and play with attitude . Could he be a break out player for the team after his first year ?sure hope so .
Would guess the coaches will push defense early in camp . Some have said playing good defense means being able to move your feet quickly to put yourself in proper position to make plays not having to react , after the offense moves by you .
Any word if the new coach will be the D man ?

The coach talks multiple times about Both Gach being a point guard. Wonder if the chance to play the position is a deal breaker? I don’t see much chance of that for the next three seasons until Flynn is gone. Maybe the coach is just trying to advertise his variety of talents to help his value?

In some earlier quotes Both said he wants to be a polished guard . Wants opportunity to play some PG . Very athletic . So if he came in this year he could get opportunity to play either guard position , to see where he fits best . Then next year coaches determine where he fits with Malachi , and Adam .
Very good talent and hope we can land him.
Believe we have been in his final 3 since we offered and he visited . Has visited TT and Utah also . Everyone wants him

Road Trip suggestion to Both Gach: Get your brother and hop in the car. Take I 90 west to I 35 south. At Des Moines turn west onto I 80. Drive to Omaha and find the Arop brothers and their pal, Edward Chang. Workout in the gym with those guys and see how you like playing together. It just might be a lot of fun.
SDSU may be your best opportunity to continue doing that for a few years at the D1 level. With excellent March Madness prospects every year.
Estimated driving time: 4 hours 45 minutes. 304 miles. Estimated gas cost $25. Or, invite those lads to see beautiful southern Minnesota.
How about a compromise: Meet in Des Moines. Show them Iowans the greatness of basketball played along the Iowa borders!

We won't have to wait much longer. Anyone know if 2 of our recruits are in town? I saw 2 young men at Fassion Valley this afternoon, both around 6-6 Ht. thin, around 17-18 yrs old, and resembling Chang and Gatch, probably just wishful thinking.

Chang was suppose see to visit after the dead period. Today is last day of dead period so he could be visiting statrting tomorrow, but I don’t think he would’ve been in town that early.

A lot of these guys are waiting for the NBA draft withdrawal to see how things domino as a result. Smart move. No need to commit anywhere prior to early June.

A higher ranking won't do us any good unless he chooses us! I'm just afraid that he wants to be (or is) a point guard and with Flynn signed up he may not see as much opportunity for immediate playing time. I really hope I'm wrong and he chooses to become an Aztec.

Flynn is a nice player and Gach is a nice prospect. there is plenty of room for both players on the roster. There are some truly stacked teams out there, I wouldn’t put our roster in that category.
