Speech finishes at -5. Tied for the lead with Brooks Koepka. Matt Kuchar goes to -5 also after only 10 holes.
X is even after two.

He's on tilt a bit after bogeying 10, 12 and 13. +1 thru 14, but he has 2 par 5's coming up at 15 and 17.

Two more bogies and is now +1. Only hitting 36% of fairways. Needs to suck it up and get a few back.

Birdies on 16 and 17 have Xander back under par at -1 (T-25) for the tournament heading to 18.

Finished -1, T26. Solid position heading into Friday and believe he'll have an early T-time when the course tends to be less brutal.
In theory the projected cut line after Rd1 would be +1, so could be around +2 if all holds consistent tomorrow. Has a slight cushion to make the cut.
Good start.
San Diegan Charlie Hoffman had a great 1st round at -3, T6.
Phil Mich needs to make up ground, sitting at +3.

There will be some carnage tomorrow as the weather takes a turn for the worse. Hopefully Xander can hold things together, because an even par round would almost certainly move him up the standings.
As a rookie playing in his first Open, just making the cut would be a victory. I expect the cut to end up at +4 or +5.

Three straight bogeys on 11, 12 and 13 puts him at +5 for the day after 14 and +4 for the tourney. Definitely in danger of missing the cut.

X finishes with birdie at 15 and bogey at 18 for +5 for the day and +4 for the tourney so far. Projected cut is currently +4, so it seems he will live to fight another day. Barely. Good news is that scores are coming in very high today. Leaders Speith, et. al. have yet to tee off. Leader is likely to finish day at anywhere between -3 or -8 for the tourney.

Definitely safe as he's currently T-55, and the top 70 and ties will advance to the weekend. The cut should end up at +5.
Tough round today but what a great learning experience for him. I'm sure he's not thrilled with his game, but hopefully he can battle back and find a way to get a back door top 25 finish. Everything from here on out is just gravy as it's such a tremendous accomplishment to make the cut against the world's best in these conditions.

I'm sure the weather didn't help. Even Phil Michaelson had a bad day +7 for the day and +10 for the tournament. Only Charlie Hoffman was better +3 for the day and even for the tournament and in 13th place.

Only 10 players under par today, including fellow San Diegan Jamie Lovemark who's E for the tournament (13th) after going -1. Projected cut is definitely looking like +5.
