I am an alum from the 80's who lives out of state. I live in Fort Collins, CO and watched a school propose and build a stadium in less than 2.5 years at a cost of under $300m. It is a great looking facility and the only issue with it will be parking. I am pretty sure CSU will figure that out but it will take time.
I have read lots of articles and lots of threads about SoccerCity, Qualcomm and other possibilities now that we are going to be homeless.
Can someone give me an idea of where we actually are in this whole process? When are we completely out in the cold? What the heck is the hold up?
Thanks in advance and I am now putting on my flame suit.

CSU's campus wasn't landlocked and didn't have to go out & find a place to play, nor did they have to deal with the politics of a major metro area. Hence why their hurdles can't compare to SDSU's.
IMO the only KNOWN facts:
1. SDSU has a contract in the Q for 2017 & 2018
2. SDSU has requested an extension for 2019 & 2020 which has not been signed
3. Padres have said they could play in Petco for 1 year, preferably 2019. If they want to play longer they can't play at home prior to November, or after the Padres season is completely over (i.e. tentative home dates in October).
Other than that its politics, positioning and bickering and completely up in the air.
Check back in 60 days to see if anything has progressed, but expect a solution will be reached someday. Nobody knows what that is though, but extremely unlikely SDSU will be "homeless" in 2020 or beyond.
Meanwhile, if you know of anyone with 17 acres to sell give SDSU a call.

I think we also know that Soccer City won't be approved until November 2018 which pushes their timeline for a completed stadium back to 2021. So even if we were in on Soccer City we'd be homeless because FS won't keep the Q open for us.
Guessing the current plan is to wait till November 2018 and see whether or not Soccer City passes. Play 2019 in Petco and then maybe a few years as road warriors. Then beg FS to let us play in their 22,000 seat stadium if it passes. If it doesn't pass try to raise money to pay for the Q to remain open at no loss to the city.

Other than Marshall Faulk talking about it, I can't think of any influential person affiliated with SDSU who has seriously advocated construction of an on-campus stadium. However, Marshall is a voice in the wilderness and lacks the financial and temporal ability to organize a fundraising campaign himself. There has been no leadership from the administration, no leadership from the Campanile Foundation or its prominent members, no leadership from any alumni with the requisite financial wherewithal to get a legitimate football stadium off the ground.
I will predict this. One, SDSU will build a football stadium within the next five years. Two, because of such lack of leadership, the stadium will not be close to as nice as Colorado State's and the result will be as many people complaining about it as have gratitude for its existence.

They dealt with a ton of push back from the community - they just had the leadership to push it through and aren't taking a penny from Ft. Collins. That being said, the debt service of their stadium is going to be a HUGE problem when their fantasy land projections fall significantly short. They took a big swing. Good for them. But it's going to be a disaster. I've seen the aerials and the discussion for the limited options you guys have on Campus. But if you can find the money - just get it done. Or build out Balboa. So many excuses. Of course if there really is a plan that will be unveiled in the next 13 days, then right on. SDSU football will be good to go. |

Brutal reach, and basically will end up paying $400MM+ when all is said & done (& they're only getting about 3500 more actual seats than the FSI plan). BTW, CSU's campus is 586 acres for 24k-ish students; SDSU's is 283 acres for 29k-ish students. As 'tight' as CSU's was they're like night & day vs. SDSU, and again, while bureaucracy always sucks a Ft Collins is nothing like a San Diego. 10x the hurdles. The answers is no one knows...
For better or worse the FSI plan is starting to fall apart.
Nothing can really happen with the Qualcomm site until November 2018.
As far as I have read or heard SDSU does not have any kind of real plan at this point.
San Diego is doing what San Diego does and is losing focus on the whole issue. I doubt the City does not extend SDSUs lease if Soccer City does not pass, the only problem will be can SDSU afford the upkeep on a 72K seat stadium that is almost 60 years old and has not been well maintained over the last 20 years?

Don't know, but CSU's stadium is located on 17.5 acres of land alone. SDSU's campus doesn't have anywhere close to 17.5 acres of land to build a stadium, and they're only seeking closer to 12-13 (17 w/ immediate parking, etc.) in Mission Valley. As tight as CSU may be it's nothing like SDSU when it comes to on campus land and the hurdles involved. |

Really high quality troll post by the OP. I am not trolling. I am really trying to understand what the current status is. I graduated in 1987 and have lived in CO since 1995. I attend most games that the Aztecs play at CSU and Wyoming. I lived through the lean years (like 25+ lean years!) and now that we are finally getting some consistency, we lose our stadium. I have tried to read through these forums and just cannot get a clean picture. I appreciate all of the feedback. Curiously, I see above that a vote on SoccerCity in November of 2018? Why so long (not that I want it to pass, I just want it decided)? |

It takes little in the way of leadership to allow public pressure to bequeath you land and to then float bonds and build a spartan stadium upon it. Don't get me wrong. Having any kind of stadium of our own will be a huge upgrade but nothing I've seen persuades me that a troika of this administration, the present leaders of the Campanile Foundation and truly rich (as opposed to simply quite affluent) alumni are going to get anything built which approximates the facility Colorado State is about to open. I DO think SDSU's plan such as it is will be announced in the next few weeks. |

I think that what was one of the fatal flaws SDSU made; they simply assumed that land would essentially be given to them, or they thought they would naturally be the frontrunner for any land grant, etc. |

Colo Aztec - please take some of the replies from the curmudgeons on this site with an appropriate degree of salt.
You have lived in both places so you can apply your own multiplier for what it costs to acquire, build , maintain and fight lawyers to a stadium, home or outhouse in Colo Springs vs. SAN.
Speaking as someone quite involved in the process, there is zero chance the Aztecs will be without a place to play. Zero. As a fan out of the area that's probably the reason for your question so let me reiterate .Zero-None-Nill-Zero. What the final resolution will be is still far from decided , there is a possibility it could even be the dreaded minor league soccer deal.
