www.youtube.com/watch?v=81AwCoJWXroMy all-time favorite Aztec victory. Side-note - look at the crowd towards the end of the game at the 10:24 mark. The place looks packed. Yet, the attendance reported was only 28,679. I think the Murph's capacity was around 52k at the time.

It was probably close to 28K in the seats. I remember going to that game my freshman year. Awesome game.

Two of my co-workers and I ditched work that Thursday to go to that game. It was 120 miles each way. Neither one of them are Aztecs, just football fans.
We were in Pacific Beach by noon. Hit every bar we could find. It was a 7:30 or so game. Walked by my old place I lived in as a student in 1973 at 3855 Ocean Front Walk in Mission Beach.
We met my brother in the parking lot before the game. We did not tailgate as much back then like we do now.
Watched the game. Wyoming was good (and tough). Back then the Aztecs didn't play defense very often, but we showed up for that game
Great victory!!!
Our designated driver made the drive home. Went to bed at about 1:30, and was back to work at 8AM Friday morning.
Good times.

Welp, my bad. Move the entire story up 2 hours. We must have been on Central Standard time. No wonder I can't remember anyone else being at the bar.

We had some receivers on that team.

We had some receivers on that team. Yup, we did in 1992, and 1995 as well. We used to be "WR U." I think the combination of Trevillion, Truxton and Holder will be solid this year. Certainly not as good as the early 90s though.

Ah, what an evening that was. Never forget it. Great to see all those jersey names again.
How good would the last couple of Aztec teams (and this year's) have been with a difference maker like Blanton at QB, and a guy with hands like Blackwell's to go get it? We'd be scary.

So here's the funny thing... I was talking with Billy and Mike Malano after the Cal game last year and both of them said that Christian is just as good as Billy was... They talked about the offense being so different and that Christian's receivers are just not as good as Bill had.

Christian doesn't have the same weapons as that team, and Christian is very talented. Having said that, Billy Blanton was the man!!!! I'd take him in my foxhole any day!!!

We had Billy Blanton, Kyle Turley and George Jones and barely pulled it out?

At the 9:50 mark. I watched that decleating block by Leandrew Childs and cringed. It was the best block I've seen in person. That camera angle doesn't do it justice. The block was totally legal and critical to the victory, but wow it was violent...so violent that the video edits out the replay. The Wyoming player was down for some time. The block was even mentioned in the: NY Times: "He [Blanton] ran for 23 yards on third-and-5 from the Wyoming 35, with the bulk of the run coming on a big block by receiver Leandrew Childs." www.nytimes.com/1996/11/08/sports/wyoming-is-now-imperfect.htmlAnd the LA Times: "Then the big play, a 23-yard scramble behind a pancake block from the 5-foot-9 Childs." articles.latimes.com/1996-11-08/sports/sp-62660_1_san-diego-state

We had Billy Blanton, Kyle Turley and George Jones and barely pulled it out? Wyoming was ranked #16 in the country at the time. The Cowboys were very good. But you left out three 1997 NFL draft picks from that Aztec team: Will Blackwell (WR Steelers) Nate Jacquet (WR Colts) Ricky Parker (DB Bears) And don't forget RB Obafemi Ayanbadejo, who wasn't drafted but had a long NFL career. And don't forget Az Hakim, who was drafted in 1998. And don't forget a young Kabeer Gbajabiamila, who was drafted in 2000.

We had Billy Blanton, Kyle Turley and George Jones and barely pulled it out? Besides coaching, the best explanation to me is that SDSU in those years had more talented individual players (same goes for the Faulk years), but were not a complete "team". Flashy talent, but not getting past .500 in the standings. Nowadays, under Rocky Long, SDSU has been a complete "team" and each year gaining players with the potential to be the next Turley or George Jones. In my opinion, the best, most balanced (a good running AND passing game plus a good defense) team in recent years was the 2010 squad with Ryan Lindley (243/421 for 3,830 yards and 28 TDs and 14 INTs), two 1,000-yard receivers in Vincent Brown (69 receptions for 1,352 yards and 10 TDs) and DeMarco Sampson (67 receptions for 1,220 yards and 8 TDs), and Ronnie Hillman (262 carries for 1,532 yards and 17 TDs). Went 9-4 and lost their games by a grand total of 15 points.
