Correct. He RS'd at SM last year & enrolled at BSU for spring camp then apparently left recently and now will be joining SDSU. Seems odd he'd leave his "dream school" that quickly. One possible theory, although I doubt it's true, is he hoped to get a scholarship for the fall & BSU didn't give him one and we did?? I don't see that happening, but you never know? Either way, once confirmed it's great to have him on board. Let's just hope he sticks here & doesn't bounce somewhere else. ESPN showed him as on scholarship but Scout did not... just like you said maybe he didn't get the scholarship he thought. BSU out of state tuition is $33k, maybe walking on at SDSU made sense...

I believe BSU is part of WUE, meaning you can get in-state tuition. Not 100% sure, but believe that's true. I know that's true for schools in WA like WSU, and believe it applies to BSU as well. Not sure how in-state tuition compares between BSU & SDSU, but can't imagine it being that different? Per the article in the Statesmen he was a PWO: "Heicklen transferred to Boise State as a preferred walk-on for the spring semester from Santa Monica Community College, and special teams coordinator Kent Riddle expected him to compete with Joel Velazquez for the starting spot at punter this fall."

Does help having a quality ST coach at SDSU . Also knowing that we have an opening , as we lost our punter from last year and the one we thought we had went to CAL .

So glad Baron won't have to also punt. Quite a coup to steal this guy from Boise especially this late.

Just to add, if you're a kicking specialist would you rather spend at a minimum 8-9+ games per year kicking off turf (PK) in sunshine or.......in Boise, or even a slick/wet turf in most stadiums up north??
For a punter we may not offer kicking at elevation but we sure offer everything else!

Has anyone heard anything about this guy transferring from up the road to SDSU & punting for us next year. Seems like a guy who can't stick anywhere, but his resume is pretty strong. Would love it if it's true. New punter??For someone who knows so much "insider" info and jumps at the chance to tout the virtues of pretty much every player on every team at SDSU as well as any prospective athletes, I'm surprised you didn't know about or haven't told us yet about this guy. What an A-hole comment. Dude.

He wanted to be close to home. Understandable in my book

Concur per July 16 UT . His father is giving his mother a kidney . So he would like to be closer to the family if they need him . Both BSU and MW have signed off - so he can play this fall . thank you.
Believe he only played 1 year at JC so has 3 to play ?

sounded as if Coutts was going to be the answer but lure of P5 did it again . Was Boudreau ( sp ) listed as punter previously. Would also guess there could be options from JC's for punters or even soccer guys . If all else fails we could use the Coryell method. Back then we couldn't afford scholarships for any kicking specialists. So, at the beginning of fall practice Coach Coryell would line everyone up and see who could kick the best. That's how the punter and place kicker were chosen. I remember those days well... in 1968 the punter was QB Dennis Shaw! (Who did throw a pass or two from punt formation, as I recall)

He can wear blue tinted sun glasses for all I care. Hopefully we don't see any shanks in that game though! : )

Feel confident our Special Teams coach will make the best of the guys we have . While great to have a punter who can change field position or pin in opponents . Most important to have a guy that does not fumble the snap or shank punts to put us in an awkward situation . Snappers - believe we are in good position there . Have learned that we need to have a reliable back up . The Aztecs have been noted to have very good long snappers on ST's over the past few years.
