Any time anybody tries to post about MLS here it reminds me of when Ted Cruz said basketball "ring" You disagree with the cities mentoned above? Please offer your expert opinion and educate all of us fools on MLS happenings. My understanding, at least from those at SDSU I've spoken with, is that SD is among the leading candidates & there's a good chance MLS would have announced SD's selection prior to a November election.

That is my fear as you can see from my original post. However, if the MLS (and Nick 'my story changes by the hour' Stone) is to be believed, they are making their decision on all four teams right around the New Year. Thus, suck it Sucker City!

Which is realistic, and it's realistic that they make that decision and include SD assuming they get the stadium issue resolved. Again, my understanding is MLS wants a team in SD IF SD can get it done.

Both scenarios are plausible. I get how SD is valuable, but I suspect MLS is more interested in money than they are SD. They will take the sure thing, in my opinion. If you are in tune with the people at SDSU, what is the contingency plan?

MLS Today (22 Teams)
West 11 Colorado Rapids FC Dallas Houston Dynamo Los Angeles Galaxy Minnesota United FC Portland Timbers Real Salt Lake San Jose Earthquakes Seattle Sounders FC Sporting Kansas City Vancouver Whitecaps FC
East 11 Chicago Fire Toronto FC New York City FC Atlanta United Orlando City Columbus Crew SC New York Red Bulls Philadelphia Union Montreal Impact New England Revolution D.C. United
Future Guaranteed Teams
West 1 Los Angeles FC will begin play in 2018
East 1 Miami Name to be determined and now that land deal is done, likely to begin play in 2018 or 2019 in a temporary stadium. There is the formality of a MLS vote, but it is just that a formality
There are currently 22 teams operating competing in MLS and there are two additional teams slated to begin play shortly bringing the total to 24 teams. Los Angeles FC and the Miami Beckhams are the two new teams.
MLS has stated that they will go from 24 to 26 and then to 28 teams. There are 11 groups competing with $uckerCity for the four slots...
Charlotte FC Cincinatti Nashville Indy Eleven Phoenix Rising (USL) Detroit St. Louis North Carolina FC (R/D) San Antonia FC Sacramento Republic TB/SP
In reality Sacramento is a done deal... They have a stadium ready to build as soon as they are accepted and they were a finalist last time.
So, when all is said and done there will be seven teams on the West Coast... Vancover Seattle Portland San Jose Sacramento LA Galaxy Los Angeles FC
which would be half of the 14 teams that will eventually play in the West...
and Phoenix has a 45 acre parcel under contract (which doesn't require anyone paying $140 for losses etc.) and ready to go if they are a winning bidder.
I know that a lot of folks thought that $uckerCity was a done deal with MLS, but there are a lot of groups that have a lot going for them, so I would be shocked if SD got an MLS expansion team.

Yup, thanks for the analysis. It seems like there are plenty of potential bids, but not all of them are viable. My understanding is that Sacramento, Phoenix, Cinci, Tampa Bay, and Sam Antonio are all viable. The rest are up in the air still, or do not have the financing or stadium plan secured yet. Is that correct? Anything I am missing?

At the time there wasn't a contingency plan - just the same things being said lately (we're exploring....yada..yada....).

The one potential group that is a long shot, but with two big time owners is Detroit FC with both the Pistons and Cavs principle owners leading their bid.

Yes, I forgot about Nashville.
I hadn't looked at it from the balance standpoint of East vs West. That makes it even less likely for Soccer City

Anyone who knew San Diego politics knew that SoccerCity was dead when it was announced... the only chance would have been for SDSU to be 100% behind it... and even then it was a long shot. Unlike the scene in the Princess Bridge where Billy Crystal tells Mandy Patankin that Wesley is only mostly dead $uckerCity is all the way dead.

I find it comical that there were numerous people who believe that SDSU was not a critical part of the process. Even many on this board did not believe that SDSU held the cards. Well, SDSU showed that they controlled the game.

I would agree that sdsu controlled the fate of Soccer City (that name alone almost sealed its fate) but the fate of the MV site is still quite unknown. Something today unknown has to be revealed.
