I am surprised that Cuba has lasted as long as it has under Castro and his brother. As pointed out in the linked article it is because of the underground economy and the spirit of the common folks there. The gradual eating up the resources of the country by socialism has been combated and slowed by the irrepressible free spirit of lots of those people.
