Even if we don't sign anyone else, we'll have the makings of a 3 guard starting lineup with Kell, Hemsley, and Watson with Teki, Schakel, and Seiko as backups...leaving the 2 frontcourt positions (assuming Pope leaves) to Cheatham, McDaniels, Narain, and Hoetzel. They will definitely fill the final two spots way way too early to tell this goes into April or May every year

We can go to three guards IF when we play other high quality teams ,we have a dominant guy plying the 5 or maybe the 4 position . Not sure we have one for 2017 after Valentine graduates ?

last night we started with 4 guards against UCSD and were not good at all on the boards Maybe I misread the UT article but I thought the animal was injured so that would leave just McDaniels at the 4 so I was calling for McDaniels to get 30 minutes or so.He ended up getting 15 which is OK but he needs to get ready fast with Hoetzel being injured and possibly Pope.I am not in favor of moving guards to the 4 EVER so I think next game hopefully we can get more minutes for the PF and Centers.

Zylan started at the 5 , Dakari at the 4 , Matt at the 3 . Reserves Nolan at the 5 , Jalen at the 4 , MG-C at the 3 .UCSD out rebounded us so not very good . Zylan was good on offense , seems best at the 4 . Jalen very thin has skills but could need muscle and a lot of work / PT . MG-C was a stud on offense .
This was against UCSD . Nolan very smooth and has a very good outside shot , seemed rusty and a little tired after his illness . Need a 5 after Valentine graduates .

so who are you saying will be playing the 5 for 2017 ? I do hope Nolan continues to improve and can handle it or Zylan ? But we will see as the season moves on ?

We don't even know who is playing the five this year. Valentine seems to be a likely option, though he's been on two teams and has had as much injury history as he's had significant minutes. Relax, Stan. Celebrate when we sign a big man. Be prepared for disappointment if we don't. Our track record is better at every other position on a basketball court.

MBB going the way of FB between P5 & G5 schools...recuriting is much more difficult given all the $$ and amenities with athletic departments. I dont know the source for the 4/5 stars, but the MW is not represented. PAC 12 = monster haul in talent.

So far it looks like we will be getting another grad transfer to share time with Nolan.Zylan plays the 4 and so does McDaniels and so does Pope, although Pope is gaining weight so maybe a 5 candidate at 6-10.

Hope Malik has a banner year , leading the team to a good MM . So do not expect him back for 2017 . We added a PG , SG , and SF . Should be loaded at those 3 positions for 2017 . Zylan , Jalen , Max at the 4 . Nolan at the 5 - we will see how much he improves during this year - does have a very good shot or if Zylan can improve his D and rebounding if really needed at the 5 . So it looks as though the coaches will have a couple of scholarships to try to get a JC or grad transfer( never know who will be available ??) at the 5 for 2017.

Dont sleep on McD and Nolan, Z will have a break-out year. 6'10 Nate Mensah should sign in '18 and hopefully 6'9 Taeshon Cherry? Norris is 5-star and will go PAC 12 6'10 Washington looks to be favoring Utah. There's no real break JC players yet, 787 transfers last year, we should get the pick of the litter. We have wings & things already.

For 2017 ; Malik could very well be gone . Jalen , Max and even Zylan ( who draws fouls way too easily at the 5 ) are 4's . Nolan is learning the 5 should be better in 2017 , was a 4 in HS .
Sure hope we can add a quality Grad transfer , or quality guys that can play the 5 . There are no locks on us getting the guys you mentioned , same thing can happen as they go through AAU games and get P5 offers?

For the past decade SDSU has held its own, and yet we still struggle to land a dominant big. Whats the deal?

Zylan commits way too many fouls while playing the 5 . Even against some poor teams. In some games he has 2 fouls by the 5 minute mark . Zylan would be incredible if he had a quality 5 , at least on D , . if we had a quality 5 - even an improved Valentine as he gets healthier , could mean Malik and Zylan as forwards - very difficult to guard .
You are correct we lose some HS recruits who play the 5 because other then M. Thomas ( who was a JC transfer ) we have not developed a 5 that can score or consistently . Z Collins with the Zags chose zags over us because he liked the way they use their 5's in their offense. When we play some national teams that do have high quality 5's we have problems , so to me it can be an area of recruiting/player development that we need to work on . If we hope for a deep run in MM - quality 5 could be needed .

Would guess that the coaches will still try to land a quality 5 . IMO we need a quality 5 if we hope to beat Nationally ranked teams in a deep MM run .

It appears Leonard Allen Jr is no longer at SD City College. Looked at his Twitter and on the 1st of November he said "2 and half months left..." which seems to put that time frame in the middle of January. Is he going to be enrolling at a 4 year for the spring semester or is something else happening in his life he's counting down for?
