If you believe Zylan is ready for NBA after this season, you should reject your season tickets and not attend any basketball game It's obvious you don't know how to properly evaluate NBA talent..stick to the D league When a talented individual can't shoot consistently a jumpshot and make it, you have no place in the NBA There is a huge gulf between writing that something "may" happen, and writing that it "is"? Zylan geeting love from CBS Sports today. I think he and Helmsely will have break out years.

back to the title 2017 recruiting and where are we finding a replacement for Valentine ? Valentine may not be good. He hasn't earned significant minutes despite playing for two different coaches on two different teams. He isn't Skylar. Skylar was a phenomenal defensive player but didn't do anything else well. This guy may not be good at all. Replacing a benched player should be easy.

Great defensive instincts & athleticism. Raw, but definitely someone who will make an impact with good coaching & being on a defensive team. He started several games last year prior to his injury. Plus, I don't think Kent played the same rotation twice all year - he didn't have a clue as to what he was doing with ANY of his players other than Hawk. Great addition. As for next year, replacing him starts with Nolan & Z, and I'm sure we can find someone to slide in behind them.

IMO Valentine Could be the type of 5 we need this year . We have the M Z combo at the forwards , could be a lot of offense but need the defense and boards . Having a guy at the 5 that protects the rim is very important . As mentioned not sure WSU knew how to use him ? Also have Nolan if more offense is needed and we were not able to sign a HS recruit that wanted to play the 5 . So we do have Q's on both Valentine and Nolan , could be a great combo , to hear we go again at the 5 , but none of us know until they start playing .
With Valentine graduating , not sure about Nolan at the 5 ( he was a 4 in HS ) , it would behoove the coaches to recruit a guy that wants to play the 5 - an area we have had difficulty getting guys to sign or maybe another 4 . At least get a few to visit ? .

He is "raw" is a really bad sign when you've been practicing at the D1 level for 4 years and have been available to play (but didn't) for three. Our coaches aren't magic. They aren't making stiffs into studs. Roster considerations have forced their hand in many instances. Kell played point as a freshman because our roster required it. This kid is not Skylar. He is not a Josh Davis proven player grad transfer. I doubt that he's even Chol. Best case scenario is he is a shot blocking foul machine, no better than Chol in his first year on the Mesa.

Some interesting stats Shots off Offensive reboundsSkylar 28-36 77.8%. Izundu 5-10 50%. Shots per 40 minutes not off of offensive reboundsSkylar 1.39-2.83 49.2% Izundu 3.62-5.38 67.4% Izundu pulled down fewer offensive rebounds and converted the ones he got at a lower rate. I think that had something to do with trying to block so many shots. With a better defense and better defensive coaching, he should get more offensive rebounds. But removing attempts off offensive rebounds shows that Izundu attempts more shots and converts 260% more FG/40 than Skylar. He should be more of an offensive threat than Skylar. For every 10 shots Skylar made Izundu made 26 and made them more efficiently (49.2%-67.4%). Angelo Chol convered at a 48.8% rate. Far lower than both. Blocked Shots per 40 minutesIzundu 5.8 Skylar 4.1 A. Chol 1.7 Izundu far out paced Chol in stats.

back to the title 2017 recruiting and where are we finding a replacement for Valentine ? Nolan Narain and Zylan Cheatham, if he stays, would be a fine 2017 duo at center. Otherwise our last resort would be a graduate transfer. Have faith.

Why did two different coaches miss this obvious stud? Was he stuck behind Lew Alcindor? You're looking at his advanced stats which are valuable but based on scant playing time. Valentine has had four years to play three. At this point, he's played in 47 games and has attempted 78 field goals. By comparison, Chol (who played on much better teams) played in 98 games and had attempted 234 shots at this point in his career.
To be clear, I hope that y'all are right. I'm just more excited about our returning players and some of our other newbs. Hoetzel, in one year, has played 240 minutes in 31 games and has attempted 56 field goals.

Again, have you seen him play? Comparing Chol to Valentine is ridiculous - they play completely different roles. Izundu didn't pick up a basketball until the 9th grade, when he was a gangly 6'6. He played JV ball until his senior year. He was extremely late to the game, and extremely raw. Despite that, and despite not playing a single game of varsity ball, he was being recruited by Texas, SMU & Marquette after his junior year, and decided to stay close to home at Houston. He played in 20 games as an extremely raw FR, setting several defensive records for a FR. He then left the team & looked to transfer, only to change his mind at the last minute & return to the team his SO year. He had to apologize to his team for doing so, and missing a lot of time with them over the summer. It hurt him, and he rarely played as a SO, partially due to injuries as well (he was their 7th man until getting injured). However, he was going to return for his junior year until his coach got fired. At WSU he put on 20 lbs & worked on his game. He was the PRIMARY starting center at WSU last year, both before his injury & then late in the season. Nobody started more games at center, despite Ernie being completely messed up all year long & starting 3 guys, none of whom got consistent minutes. He played 15 minutes a game, which is all we'd ever need him to play at SDSU, but even those #'s are skewed. If you remove the game he was injured in the first minute, and 2 others which he started but had to be pulled due to soreness, he averaged 17 minutes a game. He would have played more except he's a defensive specialist who plays on a team which a) has few offensive weapons, and b) doesn't play or value defense much. His backup, Clifford, is an offensive specialist who stunk on D, yet played about the same # of minutes because Ernie needed someone they could go to consistently when Hawk was off the floor. If WSU had 1 other offensive weapon at guard/wing, Izundu would have played a lot more minutes. That's not something he has to worry about here. As Bill pointed out, when on the floor he basically delivers what Sky delivered. Same # of shots per minute; as strong if not stronger shot blocking stats. He's also very coachable. Kent has called him the "best athlete he's ever coached". He'll be a guy who runs the floor very well, possibly better than most if not all centers we'll face. He's very much like Chol in that regard. He'll crash the boards well. But most importantly, he'll protect the rim, something we really don't have this year. He'll give us size to battle the Karnowski's & Rabb's of the world, and he won't have to cover for a bunch of poor defenders like he had to last year. The only question mark is whether he can stay healthy. He's proven he can play 17-18 minutes a game, and he's played as many as 27 minutes - against New Mex & Aget/Williams where he went for 10/3/2/2. He was hurt 2 games later. He's never proven he can stay healthy for 30. This year, with our staff, he'll actually have a defined role & a spot defined within the rotation, which he didn't have. He won't need to play 25-30 minutes. We don't need him to put up 5-6 shots a game, although he's perfectly capable. Probably more so than Sky. Like Sky, he's a perfect fit for what we're trying to do.

I really hope he can stay healthy the whole season, our trainers will have to tape him with extra great care.

I like your enthusiasm. My expectations are low. If he's as good as you say he is, he won't disappoint. My expectations are that he will block shots at a high rate. He will also likely get lost on rotations regularly and will foul at a high rate. I don't view his lack of basketball experience as being a positive. Our defense is fairly complex so he will need to make good decisions and move his feet well. We will need him to avoid fouling and to stay in position rather than blocking shots. He has some positive advanced stats which is encouraging. The sample size is small. Taking on an important role will be new for him too. We will see. I'd love it if he surprises me. I am not holding my breath.

New team , new coaches how does a person fit in and play their role needed ? with their team. Again we can all select stats that help our point of view . Max 's stats playing for IU in BIG conference play . In the 15 BIG conference games he played 102 minutes, about 7 a game . he made 3 of the 8 three pointers for the conference season, 37.5% , was about 45% on two point shots , 57% FT . Had 14 total rebounds - mostly on D . Zero Blocks .
IMO if Malik , Z, Trey , JH , Teki , Dakari ( 2 pointers) are getting the majority of the shots and Valentine is the big man in the middle on D can live with that . With him being an option as needed . Also feel that Nolan will be an option for the offense at the 5 .

IMO would still be a very good idea to try to get some guys that play 5 and 4 here to visit this fall .Besides Bey 10/22 , If he does not commit early Here are 15 4's & 5's in '18 for Stan. I believe Bey is #1 for '17, otherwise we agressively prioritze and sign Cherry, Mensah and Washington in ' 18. 1. Marvin Bagley 6'10 Sierra Canyon HS, CA 2. Jordan Brown 6'10 Woodcreek HS, CA 3. Miles Norris 6'9 Mater Dei HS, CA - offered4. Shereef O'Neal 6'9 Crossroads HS, CA 5. Kamaka Hepa 6'8 Jefferson HS, OR 6. KJ Hymes 6'9 St. Marys HS, AZ 7. Taeshon Cherry 6'8 St. Augustine HS, CA - offered8. J'Raan Brooks 6'8 Garfield HS, WA 9. Reggie Channey 6'7 Findlay Prep, NV 10. Greg Floyd 6'9 Middlebrooks HS, CA - offered 11. Warren Washington 6'10 Escondido HS, CA - offered12. Amandou Sow 6'8 Prolific Prep HS, CA 13. Nathan Mensah 6'10 Prolific Prep HS, CA - offered 14. Jordan Guest 6'7 Santa Margarita HS, CA 15. Tevian Jones 6'6 Chandler HS, AZ - offeredCan 2018 be the year? Just like Pope, Kell, Chetham & Zabo. What a year for aztec BB.

So if we have added a PG , SG and SF for 2017 and still have at least 2 scholarships remaining , three if Malik leaves for the NBA ? If we hold on to one for a transfer shouldn't at least 1 be used for a position 5 or 4 player ? Tyler Bey , if he signs plays the 4 . But maybe see if we can get a guy who plays the 5 also . Yes there maybe options at the 5 for 2018 but no one is a lock until they commit and sign . Would guess coaches have some ideas of the production they may get from Valentine , Nolan and Zylan at the 5 for this year . then going forward for 2017 with Nolan and Zylan ?
