I received a call today from some young writer for the Voice of San Diego who also works for KPBS wanting my take on the most recent B.S. in regards to their desire to remove the Aztec Warrior as our mascot.
Anybody on campus hear anything going on now or recently? Thanks
Anybody want to talk to this young lady to express their opinion on this subject that keeps coming up by a few sorry individuals?

I have heard literally no outcry about the mascot outside of this vocal super-minority.

They are doing that crap again? Perennial ritual, it appears. A university is a breeding ground for this though. Let the kids grow their experiences of altruism and progressiveness before the real world brings them down from the hippy clouds.

it's seems that the whole purpose of a college education today, for a number of students, is to find a cause to whine, cry, and complain about. you are not a student if you can not find someone or something that hurts your feelings or disrespects you in some way. the administration must remember that the majority of these cry babies will only last a year or two before dropping out to find employment at a local fast food establishment. those who last a little longer should be told to take a flying hike and find another place to seek a higher education. the 20 or 30 thousand students who still understand and appreciate the history and traditions of SDSU should stand up and tell the whiners to screw themselves. Monty lives through the Aztec warrior. if you don't like Monty or the warrior, go somewhere else that has a mascot you can live with or stay away from Aztec sporting events. pal around with your fellow whiners and find a new cause, like free the sea world whales or picket a veggie restaurant because the owners enjoy a delicious, juicy steak now and again.

Who's saying that these are college students? These issues are being started and funded by professional organizations. They attack any school that has a remotely discriminating mascot. These professional organizations then go onto campus and use the students to pass the message. They are a wolf in sheeps clothing. So, take it easy bud. The people behind this are not students.

Professional organizations? When are we going to hold the "kids" accountable for something? It's too bad that parents these days and society has raised a bunch of youths who aren't able to think for themselves or make better decisions. This is akin to blaming "big tobacco" for getting a bunch of kids hooked on cigarettes; the youth of today lacks common sense and we should stop making excuses for them. And spare me the whole "well, I'm sure you did dumb stuff when you were a kid" routine. This isn't about that. I think it's pretty clear that the kids of today are lacking in many areas. Now get off my lawn!

I was there in the early 00's when the changed it to "Ambassador Montezuma". A good friend of mine was one of the leaders of the 'Mexicans like that we respect their culture by using the Aztec mascot' side. Of course, a few sabre rattlers care about making a name so they need to find someone or something to protest.

Relax people. Stop generalizing. College is a place to explore. There are legitimate grips to deal with. However, we dealt with this as students in 2002 (when I was a student and not a professor). This argument is just a few people who don't understand that the Aztec tradition we have is one based on respect. SDSU isn't going to focus on this. The Hirshman Muslim problem however, is way way bigger than this. That could cost him his job.

College students protesting something. Yeah that's a new phenomenon. Kids these days should just shut up, toe the line, and accept the status quo like all us older folk did back in the day.

Now get off my lawn! Yes, professional organizations. There are activist groups all across the country that try to remove certain mascot names from Universities. This topic is brought up every year, not just with San Diego State. Florida State has been hit hard by these activist. So has North Dakota Fighting Sioux...as well as Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It is not the student body. Quit the old miserable bastard talk of "kids these days". It is not them. It is actual activist organizations that start these campaign. But, their ploy is to spread the word around the student body. The student body vote is the most powerful thing for a university.

But, their ploy is to spread the word around the student body. The student body vote is the most powerful thing for a university. I never said that kids "start" these silly campaigns; kids "today" don't have common sense was what I was trying to get at, regardless of whatever organizations are puppet-mastering them. I'm not mad at the organizations that start certain campaigns (political, or otherwise), I'm simply showing my dismay for young people who blindly follow certain causes and don't fully examine them from all angles simply because they feel passionate about something on that specific day. Yup, the student body vote might be the most powerful thing for a university. However, if the student body is careless enough to vote for a cause while being uninformed, then that's what they get and that's what they have to live with. No blame from me against professional organizations or a big, bad company trying to influence their vote. I'm not saying I agree with it, just that young people need to take responsibility for things like researching certain topics. As long as there are people willing to be influenced by specific organizations, those organizations and their agendas will always exist.
