With the collapse of the schools around the MWC, it is time for us(including admin) to take serious leaving this DEAD conference.
Don't tell me wait for the new stadium cause that at least 5 years away.
If your hopes and dreams are tied to the Chargers leaving and sdsu getting enough money to together to buy mv and build A stadium we are f u c k e d. Just seems unrealistic to assume that the public will allow for the gifting the land to sdsu so jmi can build it. John moores is not dean, but he isn't tony Gwynn either when it comes to being liked.
Not saying that it won't happen but we need a plan b.
A very likely scenario is the Chargers vote passes, and they will then extend the lease at Qualcomm to 2024. Dean said as much at the kick off event.
So we are now looking at 7 years until sdsu west can even start.
That's a very realistic scenario.
So what is plan b?
Freaking join the AAC or start a new football only Conference and join the big west for everything else.

Since they will probably need a 2/3 majority to pass their initiative (as that's what they are planning for), I don't think there is any way in hell that it passes.

We are getting hammered financially due to the tv contract. As are most other G5/non-Major conferences. The AAC's contract isn't any better than ours right now. AAC is 7-year $126MM, while MWC is 7-year $116MM. So the gap is about $100k per team per year. The biggest issue is the BSU sweetheart deal, meaning the funds aren't distributed very well, especially knowing SDSU is among the least likely to get picked up for the bonus money.
There isn't going to be realignment until the P5's realign. We can talk about it all we want, but nothing is happening for 2-3+ years, and not without the P5's having the initial say. Jumping to the AAC accomplishes nothing right now, just like having Houston/Cincy jumping to the MWC would accomplish nothing. Plus, any program we'd want to align with from the AAC (& MWC) isn't going to commit to any new, long-term conference TV deal when they know there's a possibility they could get a P5 invite. Why would you? In order for the "new" conference to survive, and warrant any type of decent (improved) TV deal the buyout would need to be enormous.
We can either bitch about it, as many are obsessed with doing, or deal with it until the situation changes. Our only option today is to win our conference. I'd rather focus on what we actually can do, than complain about what we can't control. But that's just me.

Not so fast, there is a backup plan. And if your not close enough to the program, you don't need to know about it.
Agree about moving to another conference. Its time, this one is parasitic unless your Boise.

PAC is Never going to let SDSU in . Big 12 will have meetings this summer to discuss how they want to move forward . So step 1 wait and pray for B12 to see if they release what their thoughts may be going forward . Some suggest form a new conference with AAC but, AAC has a 10 million fee to leave their conference , so there is no way they leave for a new conference .
So another option is MW vs AAC- West Division . Some feel just stay in MW . IMO AAC could be an opportunity to explore . Some topics that could be examined: Conference leadership , TV markets , Recruiting states , travel to schools , opinions of the two conferences and schools Nationally , location of MBB tournament, . To me do not see MW ahead of AAC in any area . Would wonder if SDSU and another school went to the AAC = add CA and ?. If TV networks may increase the TV money to AAC . Could the TV Network say to MW , the deal included SDSU and ? , they are no longer members so lets take a second look at what you have now . Next very important issue is Recruiting - could the move to AAC help the Aztecs recruiting in Texas , Florida or other areas in SE , but we would lose recruiting in Wyoming , Idaho , New Mexico, UT ,.? Leadership , AAC is far superior and Coach Fisher is rarely appreciated in MW . In the long run see travel to major cities in AAC is better then to altitude of Mountain schools , especially in the winter . Rivalry with Navy could be far superior to AFA . Could see rivalry of SDSU and Texas schools as a something that would grow .

A BYU writer writing about how BYU would be the perfect addition. Shocking.
I'm sure these 2 are the leader in the clubhouse IF the B12 only expands with 2 schools, and if they haven't imploded by then.
However, that's a major assumption. With the B1G contract, the B12 may be blown apart completely, and they could either a) find themselves needing to replace 2-3 schools, or b) to avoid attrition down the road and/or position themselves better against the B1G they could expand to 14 or even 16. The B1G could even add Cincy and/or BYU, throwing this all out of whack.
Too many unknowns, whether for this spring, summer or even a year or two from now. Will be interesting to see if they decide to do anything in Phoenix next month, or even in June? My guess would be no.
We have a plan A, B & I'm sure even C in place for when the cards do actually fall. Unfortunately, until they do.... Hopefully by then we'll have a resolution on the Chargers, be further along in stadium plans, have another great football season behind us, and possibly a NCAA tourney run in our belts. More so, hopefully we'll have more Aztec Club members supporting the program, a finished & significantly improved weight room and a few conference championship notches in our belts.

Fisher will never coach in any new conference.

You don't do anything but win. If we go undefeated this year, then undefeated next year, we get invited to the PAC 14 or BIG 14. It's that simple. With our administration not out with a plan for a new stadium our contract and city become much more of a sell. The only way Utah and TCU were able to move to big conferences was by winning.

With our administration not out with a plan for a new stadium our contract and city become much more of a sell. The only way Utah and TCU were able to move to big conferences was by winning. Having success is important, but it's just as much about the overall success of the athletic department as with football.
However, Utah was added to the P10 for one main reason - Salt Lake City. They expanded the conferences footprint, allowing them to expand the P12 Network to the Mountain time zone. They also happened to be a Tier 1 Research school, which was necessary for inclusion. They could have been a 7-5 football team & still got an invite, as long as their overall athletic program was respected & in good shape.
As for TCU, keep in mind they actually left the MW for the Big East, not the Big 12. Plus, they would not be in the Big 12 if Texas A&M hadn't bolted for the SEC. This was the B12 planting another flag in Texas, and not having A&M around to say no thanks.
Logistics & TV revenue are critical to conference invite - that's the meat & potatoes, more so than going 10-2 vs. 7-5. Having a good record is just the gravy.

Why does this thread remind me of that song by Jimi …
Still Raining, Still Dreaming
Rainy day, rain all day Ain't no use in gettin' uptight Just let it groove its own way Let it drain your worries away yeah Lay back and groove on a rainy day hey Lay back and dream on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back Oh yeah !
Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and dream on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and dream on a rainy day Lay back and, lay back, lay back, lay back and groove.
Ooh Aaaah !
Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and groove on a rainy day Lay back and dream on a rainy day.
Still rainin' still dreamin'
OR
…maybe it was…
Rainy Day, Dream Away

As it stands now, it is not realistic for SDSU to aspire to the PAC-12 or BIG-12 because those conferences consist entirely of Research 1 and PhD granting universities--and I mean schools that maintain independent PhD programs, not joint programs, like SDSU has. This doesn't seem like it has anything to do with sports, but the universities in those conferences--especially the PAC--definitely perceive SDSU to be in a lower category of university. In reality, this is a false perception--SDSU is actually a very active research university, on par with some of the schools in each conference. But universities like UCLA or Kansas, independent of basketball pedigree, will resist a school like SDSU joining their conference. The leadership on campus has relentlessly worked to move SDSU into R1 status, and the recent faculty raises will be an excellent step in that direction. But until SDSU frees itself from the state mandate that the UC system is for PhDs/research and the CSU is for teaching, it will be stuck, despite the fact that SDSU is far and away the research leader in the CSU and is probably ahead of a couple of the UCs and some schools in the PAC and BIG.

The article jibron cites is interesting. Interesting because, once again, SDSU is not even mentioned. Not even mentioned as a bad candidate for Big-12 expansion. We may be able to join the AAC (though even that is a very long shot), but we will almost certainly never be able to join a P5 conference. Our only viable option is to absolutely dominate the MWC, or, at best, rotate with Boise State as conference champs. It's time to be realistic, folks. AzW

Those who say we have no chance of ever being invited to the P12 are living in the past -- when SDSU was a nice little 4-yr. college on the Mesa. It's not that anymore. Its academic standing has gone from almost non-existent to higher than four of the P12 schools (and soon to be five or six.)
The entire deal hinges on the MV West expansion. Should that turn into reality, the P12 will be forced to let us in. Part of the plan for the expansion is the establishment of a research component for the university and the possibility of granting Ph.D.s and conducting research, perhaps stand-alone, or perhaps in conjunction with UCSD on the site. The MV West expansion will push SDSU's enrollment to 45k to 50k+, making SDSU among the 10 largest universities in the U.S. -- all of whom are P5 schools. With our new stadium, excellent location for hosting bowl games, etc., it will be extremely difficult for a P5 conference to ignore us. And if the B12 starts sniffing around, the P12 will definitely snap us up. The last thing in the world they want is the B12 dipping into their Calif. recruiting pool.
And, no, we don't have to wait 7 to 10 years to bust down the doors. If we have a plan in place and MV West is approved and in the works -- 2 to 4 years from now -- a conference might want to include us as a pre-emptive strike.
So, yeah, MV West is massively critical to SDSU's sports program and it future. Without it, we're doomed to the bottom-feeding has beens of the MGC.
