DJ Gay was a UC Irvine commit late into the recruiting period before he decommitted to them and verballed to SDSU. We have definitely been burned a few times but we've also benefited from today's recruiting culture.

These days EVERY school has kids decommit - even Alabama, Ohio St, and USC. It has become part of the process unfortunately and remember schools sometimes pull offers, too. So it goes both ways.

Very basic trickle down recruitment . The very high level P5 schools fight each other for the best recruits .The schools that do not land the best then move on down to next level . Continues on down the P5 levels . So the mid to lower P5 then try to land guys that G5 schools had recruited . This is not the first time this has happened and will not be the last . Solidify our top recruits in the vital areas and move forward . Another part of the P5 / G5 situation .

If nothing else, at least it shows we're doing well at identifying players.

I get that kids change their minds. The thing that is aggravating is them making a big deal about the commitment then flipping. Johnson was all over SD radio and TV saying how he wanted to stay home and be a hometown guy so his parents could come watch and blah, blah, blah. The he gets an offer from a P5 school that's 2000 miles away. and drops SDSU like a bad habit.
It's fine that they change their mind but commit and shut your mouth unless you intend to honor it. That way you don't come off as a liar.

At least Johnson put in a good word for SDSU before decommitting.

That way you don't come off as a liar. You really think the kid went out of his way to contact the press, or did the press reach out to him? Of course you're going to answer that way, when the guy asking questions is probing for reasons. It's the way of the world these days. These kids are under pressure from all angles to make a decision. Minds are bound to change sometimes. He's not making his life decision on your behalf. Get over it.

At least Johnson put in a good word for SDSU before decommitting. Oldie Out Wow! That is equivalent to the current generation getting a "participation trophy". Pass on that. These are kids of which "many" are focused on chasing the next shiny object (i.e. P5). Those are ones that lack a bit of mental maturity that hopefully they will gain in college. Once college is done a big part of success is being a man of honor and integrity that includes keeping your word, working hard and focusing on doing what is right and not necessarily easy or shiny. Sure, people leverage jobs all the time for better pay and it could be the same as decomitting from any G5 to any P5. In the end, each high school athlete has to make a decision on what is best for them. You hope they are honest with themselves and their families. Decisions today could have an impact in the future. All of us want the best for Aztec athletics (most of us) and when a "potential" difference maker decommits it is a blow to our psyche on wanting to continue to improve as a university. Ultimately, the student athlete that cherishes an opportunity to represent this great institution that is SDSU is who I will support and trust that Coach Long will get every ounce of ability out of these young men that will show positively in the community and on the football field. Best of luck to those that changed their minds and found the shiny pot of gold and CONGRATULATIONS to those young MEN that honored their word and will become Aztec's for LIFE.

Twitter and the like make HS players feel like they are superstars and celebrities when all they have done is plow over crappy HS players for a couple of years. It leads to more de-commits because they like the attention they get and it feeds their growing narcissism.
I am not worried in the least. This staff brings in talented and hungry football players who fit well into this system. If someone decides not to be part of it, it just makes room for someone who does.

That way you don't come off as a liar. Like any decision, you make the best decision you can given the information available at the time. Sometimes you don't have ALL the information or it changes.
I'm sure Johnson chose to commit after reviewing all of his options at the time, and it's obvious he was very excited about his decision. As a QB, who tend to be the cornerstone of the class, he's going to be contacted by the press & he SHOULD go on the air & promote. Many QB's who sign early are actually a team's best recruiters. They reach out to others they've met at camps via social media, etc. Believe Johnson was one of those.
Last month, or thereabouts, he go NEW information, which was an offer to a P5 school which fits his style of play. Something that wasn't available to him when he decided to commit. He evaluated, and made the best decision with ALL the information. Nothing wrong with that.
There are recruits who commit KNOWING if a better offer comes along they'll bolt. They're just waiting for their "dream school" to offer, but want to plant their flag somewhere just in case they don't. There are others who truly WANT to play for the school they commit to, not expecting or even "wanting" a specific "dream school" to come along. Instead, they decommit only when a really great, unforeseen opportunity comes along.
I see Johnson more in the latter camp, not the former. Guys like Chin I see more in the former camp - when he committed he KNEW if UW offered he was gone.
I don't blame Johnson one bit for his decision, nor do I see him as a "liar". Not even close. I see him more like someone who's very happy in their job & tells everyone they intend to retire from that company, only to have another company come along & offer to double their salary a week later. I wouldn't consider them "lying" when they said they intended to retire from the original company. It's just all they knew at the time.
PS. I also see this kid as a potential bounceback

All these guys think they are going to star at a P5. Problem is that there are other players at their position that think the same thing. How many times have we seen players starting on the field later in their allotted time? Hey, if you are good, you would start or at least get lots of PT as a red shirt freshman here. Unless they are going to the SEC, they are no more likely to be drafted higher than if they go to SDSU. Maybe less......

Our last 4* wide receiver (I can't remember his name for the life of me), I believe, never qualified academically and played a down for the Aztecs. Hazely (and Pitts) were only only wide-outs who are graduating...leaving us with an experienced group including Holder, Judge, Mills, and Favreau. Cumberlander and Anderson should be working their way up the depth chart as well... Heywood was a stud and will be sorely missed...but his replacement Jr. Alex Barrett along with RSF Noble Hall, Jr. Kyle Kelly, So. Sergio Phillips will bring a lot of game-time experience to the DL next year (along with several Freshmen who are waiting in the wing and learning)...
The glass is more than half-full as the Aztecs lose very little from a team that won 11 games (although I'm super nervous about losing Hageman and Overbaugh from special teams)...
