Leaf can become an Aztec, a "Hometown Hero" and be the missing piece to a Final Four ...or a cog in the machine at a "Blue Blood" school .

JJ averaged 33 minutes a game. Minutes are there for players who are good enough and can handle it.

JJ averaged 33 minutes a game. Minutes are there for players who are good enough and can handle it. Or when no one else is good enough to demand minutes.

I thought most of us complained that Fish doesn't "platoon" enough, using a pretty short bench (as said before, usually only 8 players) especially during conference season.

Our player substitution is pretty close to normal.

A lot of hockey teams use three lines.

Our player substitution is pretty close to normal. Exactly,J.J. O'brian played almost every minute last year.If you are a good player and make minimal mistakes you will stay on the floor here.

I don't think it's necessarily the rumor, and definitely not the platooning nor the tempo. I think it's more that the P12 is in the middle of an up cycle, and Oregon & UCLA (after UA, UW, Cal & OSU last year) are having exceptional recruiting years. Many teams in the P12 are simply pulling in a lot of talent, and other kids are jumping on board.
It's cyclical - they'll have a down year in a year or two when kids realize they can't start right away.
With the 30-second clock tempo is going to become a non-factor, and we actually are an average tempo team offensively. That'll only improve this year with both 4 ball handlers on the floor at the same time, and length to grab the d-boards.

Cal gets 2 top recruits and everyone expects big things. If they don't win the P12 and don't do well in the NCAA tourney, they will drop off the radar. Happens to teams every year. The 1 and done players don't build a program. If you have a program, then they can put you over the top some years.

Coach Fisher does what other coaches do early in OOC games they get about 10 or more players into the game , to see what you have . But when you play top 25 teams in OOC you may only use about 8 .When we play easier team more reserves play . Coaches need game time to evaluate their players. Same thing as the season moves on into conference play . Biggest factor is then the production from players 6 through 8 or 10 . if they perform you use them if not you go to your best 6 to 8 or 9 as needed . All depends on the quality of your reserves .
CAL 's coach was able to recruit 2 of the best 10 players in the country , one from Bay area one National . PAC is a very good conference, their coach is very well respected , if they are near the top of the PAC and do well in MM , then they will be able to continue to recruit well . Also if they have a 1 and done player , he gets drafted into NBA and does well also helps their recruiting . High quality Recruits seem to focus on the guys as they move into the NBA. We used to dominate East Bay/SAC area , not so any more. CAL has made connections . Every year is different for recruiting but do feel CAL is in a much better situation then they were a few years ago .

The 1 and done players don't build a program. If you have a program, then they can put you over the top some years. What has people excited about Cal isn't just the 2 freshmen, but it's the fact they're being added to an already good team. But agree - 1 recruiting class doesn't DEFINE a program, but it definitely can kick-start a program. They have Jolly (4-star) & Frayer (3-star) thus far this year, and believe both were committed long ago. They're in the door with several very highly recruited guys, so getting Rabb/Brown may have opened that door. But it's still TBD whether this kick-starts or is an aberration.
They do need to do SOMETHING with these guys or it's less of a coup.
Overall though, the P12 had 3 teams with top 12 recruiting classes last year, and several highly rated players following a pretty good 2014 as well. IMO other programs can feed off that. Rising tide lifts all ships type of deal. The MW will be MUCH improved this year, but from a recruiting perspective it's basically been UNLV & SDSU, then the rest when it comes to the elite players. That's fine if you're competing against just the UA's or UCLA's of the world, but when the P12 now has 5+ programs with GREAT classes in 2014 and/or 2015 that hurts for 2016.
As any coach will say, your players are your best recruiters. Given the influx of great talent the past couple years the P12 has a lot of very good recruiters talking to their buddies (kids like Cage, Stanback, Leaf, etc.) which definitely makes it tougher on us.
We'll still get great talent because the framework is there, with great support & facilities. The challenge is just harder with the P12 investing so much money now in hoops since they've already rebuilt their football facilities. But in college basketball, if you're among the elite teams in your own conference, and thus can deliver a ticket to the main stage annually, you'll always get good talent. It just may not be our FIRST choices. Like you said, if Cal can't PROVE they can get to the main stage then they fall back off the map. Same with the Colorado's of the world. If they're a perennial 6th or 7th place team (or worse), they fall off the map.
