Pick's by Geoff Grammer - New Mexico's Mark Ziegler He went to nmsu fyi if you want good mwc basketball new check his twitter www.abqjournal.com/655063/sports/geoff-grammers-preseason-mountain-west-basketball-ballot-2015-16.htmlPredicted order of finish
1. San Diego State: Who leads in the absence of JJ O’Brien? The team has plenty of talent, but again needs a shooter, a point guard and now a leader to emerge. I’ll still side with the Aztecs, but I think the MWC title is a three team race.2. Utah State: The Aggies return five starters for first year head coach Tim Duryea, including potential all-leaguers in guard Chris Smith, center David Collette and forward Jalen Moore, who might be Player of the Year. Yes, Stew Morrill is gone, but don’t tell me coaches taking over MWC programs with returning talent on the roster haven’t had success in recent years (see Craig Neal 2014 and Larry Eustachy 2013). 3. Boise State: I didn’t think Derrick Marks and Anthony Drmic could co-exist in the same backcourt and have the Broncos contend last year. When Drmic was lost to injury for the year, Marks took the league by storm and my pick for this season’s Player of the Year, James Webb III, emerged. Losing what Marks became will be impossible to overcome, but I do have more confidence in the Drmic/Webb one-two punch. 4. UNLV: No fan base sent more disdainful criticism of my preseason ballot a year ago than the Rebels when I picked them sixth. They were correct. I had the team pegged all wrong. With another first round NBA Draft pick on the roster, they finished seventh. Time for my annual copy and paste Rebels prediction: “UNLV has he talent to win the league, but until I see it happen, I’ll temper expectations.”

So we lose 3 of our top 4 scorers - including our starting point guard and unquestioned leader/glue guy, have no projected first team players nor rookie nor newcomer of the year and he still picks the Aztecs at #1? Guess he's giving the coaching staff/team a lot of respect but I'd rather be the underdog coming into the season.

I'm looking forward to seeing BSU's Webb going against Pope. It'll be a classic matchup. Webb is older, but raw. Pope's leg injury was a 2 year setback.

Webb is vastly underrated, I think he'll be one of the MWC POY leaders this year.

Webb is vastly underrated, I think he'll be one of the MWC POY leaders this year. His strength is in the paint. Pope's is the perimeter. Who will have an easier transition to be a more complete player? Webb making perimeter shots or Pope working on his inside game? I say Pope.

My memory may be off but I seem to remember Webb benefiting from a lot of uncontested put backs when the AZTECS were concentrating on the Boise St. PG. There were a lot of box outs that never happened!

Webb shot 40.9 % from three last year, 46% of his FGA were threes That surprises me, although we held him below his average against us overall(3-8). This year we'll have guys who could really contest him from the perimeter. Shep can, but he had to guard Marks because AQ couldn't. Pope played little, no Cheatham.

There were a lot of box outs that never happened! That's something Spencer and Chol absolutely have to do this year, no ifs, ands or buts. If they don't we should go Draymond Green style, put Cheatham at center. He'll be a load. Shep was our best defender and rebounder, but he had to guard Marks outside.

Guess he's giving the coaching staff/team a lot of respect but I'd rather be the underdog coming into the season. It is respect, but also a sign of the further decline of the MWC as a men's hoop conference. A few years ago, we were ahead of the Pac-12, and now they're lapping the MWC. San Jose State certainly doesn't help, but the fact the Rebs and Lobos are down are why. BSU is a good team on the rise, but they're SDSU circa 2010. So on the cusp of a national recognition. USU being picked that high shows how terrible Rice is at everything basketball-related sans recruiting and Noodles is gradually making New Mexico into another Colorado State.

www.coloradoan.com/story/sports/csu/mens-basketball/2015/10/05/mountain-west-basketball/73414208/Both CSU writers pick Aztecs #1 also. 1. San Diego State
Aztecs still bring the best defense in the Mountain West and just enough offense to win championships under Steve Fisher.
Sean Farnham, ESPN College Basketball Analyst; Former Captain of UCLA Basketball was at practice today. Sean Farnham @seanfarnham 5h5 hours ago Enjoyed watching SDSU practice today and their practice facility is outstanding. Sean Farnham @seanfarnham 3h3 hours ago SDSU faithful should expect much of the same...great defense with the potential for an improved offense with Pope breaking out Sean Farnham @seanfarnham 3h3 hours ago Really liked what I saw out of SDSU Fr. PG Jeremy Hemsley...values the basketball like the Aztecs' pg's before him Sean Farnham @seanfarnham 3h3 hours ago SDSU's Zylan Cheatham has an energy about him that changes the game when he is on the floor...Great motor never stops

I expect Hemsley will bring more than Quinn. JJ is the player we will miss but Shepard at PF this season could be a better all around player. Kell and Spencer should improve. We add Cheatham on the bench. We will miss Shrigley.
