Sure sounds that there is a hint that the offense as many have suggested will be at least a little more up tempo , trying to get rebounds and out into transition as much as possible . Last year starters Spencer , Winston, then JJ , Shrigley , AQ , this year could be Spencer , Winston then add Malik , Kell and JH and you see a much more athletic group that could try to get into transition and attack the basket . Getting rebounds then the ball into JH or Kell's hands for out let passes and the forwards running the floor . Numerous times last year our guards got the out let pass and did not look for the wings moving down court , all starts with getting the rebound and frame of mind. Will that be the offense this year , who knows for sure but we seem to have the talent to at least try it . Also guys off the bench Zylan , D. Allen, Chol , and Williams are also guys that can run and attack the basket . Perez and U give us additional numbers , even in elevation .

Skylar Spencer is extremely good, there is more to the game than PPG. He is vastly underrated on here. He needs to score this year.. Doesn't need to be the scoring leader by any means but needs to contribute 8-10 ppg. Team with the most points always winsAnd he has helped with that all 3 years, rebounding, passing, defense, those are all things that contribute to the final score. And his elite defense, his ability to switch, and to protect the rim without fouling has contributed to our winning a ton. He has been a very good player for us, and doesn't need to score more for that to change.

Unless Skylar had a complete change of mindset over the off season, he will be the same Skylar, a good defensive and team player as noted above. Team captain also!

He lacked court vision which made us a one dimensional team, for the most part. I think that's what really hurt us against the better teams despite our solid team defense. This is why I'm so anxious to watch Hemsley on the floor.

Defensively Sky is a beast! We will have plenty of scoring this year. I just want Sky to keep on, keeping on......block them shots, get timely put backs and be a menace in the key. And when he gets to the line, make it look like he doesn't have a broken hand.

One thing I'd like to see is more second chance points per offense rebound. Too many times last year we dominated rebounding but not second chance points. We need the bigs to go up strong with offensive rebounds. The Washington game is case in point. Offensive rebounds 10 Washington 21 SDSU Second Chance Points 14 SDSU 15 Washington To dominate the boards but get outscored in second chance points is a win the nettle but lose the war scenario, because the object of rebounding is second chance points. This breakdown is on point. We did a good job on the boards last year. Those offensive rebounds did not get the additional points that it should have. A great box out by JJ or an offensive rebound by Chol and Spencer too often resulted in the ball getting kicked back out into our stagnant offensive set rather than an easy put back or trip to the line. I think that Winston, Pope, and Zylan could be huge when it comes to improving in tie regard.

Yes for all those that worry we are going to forget about D if we start to open up the offense and play with a little more up tempo style . Coach Fisher and Coach H will always stress the D . 30 second shot clock is now in play , also our good coaches realize that every year you review your players and use a style or two that best use their talents. Same coaches have recruited this very athletic group of players , could be a great year to let them use their skills on offense as well as D . JH could be major difference also the senior years for Winston , Skylar and Angelo , think they will want it to be their best . In addition believe that if SS/AC combo truly becomes involved in the offense will help our recruiting at the 5 position going forward . The 9 current active guys on scholarship are very athletic and should easily be ready to hit the court running . Could be the most entertaining offense we have had in a long time .

No doubt he's done good things to contribute but I shouldn't have the same amount of points sitting in the stands that he has playing the whole game. He doesn't have to look for the shot but a few put backs and a couple free throws each game isn't asking too much. How hard could it be to make a 2 ft shot (JJ not included)

I don't need to hear how somebody is "athletic". This is D1 hoops, everyone is athletic. Just tell me you can shoot and score, play D, team basketball, rebound and not turn the ball over.

Sky can't go several games without scoring. I don't expect him to be our leading scorer or someone who we design plays for. But last year when we ran the Point GUARD high screen n roll with Sky being the screener, the opposing teams would allow sky to roll by himself to the basket. Our guards would throw the ball to him and he would either fumble the ball or get foul resulting in zero points. Sky needs to make opposing teams pay for not guarding him.

It all starts with the game plan from the first set of practices . If told to both SS/AC that this year we are going to need them as part of the offense . Work on getting open near the basket , then expect a quick pass , control it, if they have an open shot near the basket take it if not quickly move the ball to another team mate .If they can do something positive they will continue to see the ball . Yes they will also need to be able to make FT's (60 % + ). They can work together at the JAM center at both FT's and controlling quick passes / keeping the ball high . Last year we got about 8 points a game combined from them . Would 12-15 be a goal for this year .? If it works then great , if not then it will be back to ball screen or at least getting more rebounds ? There is talent there now the coaches need to find a way to bring it out of them , know both guys want to contribute on both ends of the court.

so Skylar at Center, Shep at power forward, Malik at the small forward 3, Kell at the 2 SG, and Hemsley at PG. We can move Malik to the SG take Kell out, and put Zylan at small forward. I would love to see this line up too. Adding minutes for Pope, Hemsley, Zylan, for JJ and Quinn makes you more athletic by far. Should be really exciting this year. More likely that Shepard plays some 2 if the forwards earn minutes over the guards. Shepard can guard a 2. Pope hasn't shown defense close to what Shepard brings. Pope and Kell on the court together for extended minutes will require us to score more just to maintain what we had.

We've played with four guards and one forward. Why not four forwards with one guard? Shep, in this scenario would absolutely be playing defense against the two but Pope has the better offensive perimeter game.

Top 4 Aztecs in Steals last year
1. JJ 2. AQ 3. DP III 4. Matt S
They accounted for 54.6% of our steals.
Concern?

Major reach on that one . Must have gotten out your slide rule .
Look at average minutes played: JJ was first over 33 , AQ tied for second at 26 ( with Winston), then Skylar at 23 , then Shrigley 21 , and DP at 20 . So the 4 you named played a major amount of minutes.4 of the top 6 on the team .
Will guess that current team JH, Malik, Winston, Zylan, Sky, ,D.Allen will have more steals by the end of the season .

Having a real PG means that guys down in the paint get fed for easy layups and guys out on the wings get wide open shot opportunities. Our guard play hurt us last year and most specifically due to the fact that our PG position was weak. This is not a knock on Kell or Quinn, they were just not suited for that position.
If Hemsley can come in and give us defense, assists (a function of leadership on offense) and some points (including from the FT line) we are going to be much better than last year. Hopefully DW will step up for provide some competition to the position. A good PG doesn't have to score as much as putting his teammates in the position where their scoring abilities are optimized to be effective.

It should be 42.5% of the minutes. Don't know where I miscalculated on that one. I should have noticed the number was obviously wrong because it would represent less than one position. Below are the steals per 100 possessions from last year with the projected starters in bold. Hint: look way down at the bottom. Steals per 100 possessions Steals/100 Player5.1 D'Erryl Williams 4.3 Dwayne Polee 3.2 Dakarai Allen 2.8 J.J. O'Brien 2.5 Aqeel Quinn 2.5 Matt Shrigley 1.9 Trey Kell1.9 Kevin Zabo 1.5 Winston Shepard1.5 Skylar Spencer1.1 Malik Pope1.1 Angelo Chol
