With a city full of transplants and carpetbaggers, it's a tough sell.
And it's hard to stay away from the beach.

I heard it and he is correct. On the big donor it great he donates, but he will only donate if we win a big game? That statement is what wrong with this community.

I usually like the guy as an analyst but thought he sounded like a jerk. Comparing supporting SDSU football to supporting Notre Dame football is absurd. He was also asked about the SDSU vs USD game specifically in terms of SDSU having to play this type of opponent and his answer simultaneously misses the question and makes little sense. Lastly he says SDSU is his favorite dark horse west coast team when he's really talking about ASU.
Yo Aaron, maybe mix in a little decaf from time to time.

Only if San Diego didn't have beaches then the support for SDSU football would be off the charts.

I loved his passion around the 7:30-8:00 mark (need to hear Scott's question for context). If only the majority of SDSU "fans" had that kind of fire to support their own school, the program would be much better off.
It's a good reminder of the competitive disadvantage Rocky is facing, even within the Mountain West, and yet he still is able to put out an overall quality product year in and year out.

Didn't hear him but can't blame fans for not being excited about playing USD. If we were playing Penn State at home then the Murph would be full. Besides you ever been to South Bend? People rally when they switch up the buffet at the Holiday Inn.

This was a great interview. I really appreciate the coverage that 1090 is giving SDSU FB right now. AT was on fire and had some valid points. The point in the interview that I thought was interesting was when Kaplan spoke of a prospective donor that will invest in the program when there are some key wins. It is indicative of what I have suspected all along. Currently the big money in SD that would make the donations are not alumni due to the focus of the university over he past 50 years. Since this is the case, non alumni that will contribute will want to see a measure of success by football prior to contributing to the cause. We have seen this already in basketball and it makes sense. This is one of the things that holds SDSU back in the grand scheme of things. Until there are anchor programs (doctors, lawyers, vets, etc) that turn out high dollar alumni you will not have as many alumni with millions available to back the athletics programs as you see at UCLA or Cal. I think the university has make great strides and is developing that alumni base, but the near term need for donations will come from affluent San Diegans that did not attend SDSU. To reap their contributions there needs to be some movement forward (win the conference, beat P5 teams, Access Bowl) to inspire the pocketbooks to be opened.

With a city full of transplants and carpetbaggers, it's a tough sell. And it's hard to stay away from the beach. Oldie Out Every year SDSU has roughly 34,000 students, and every year SDSU pumps out 10,000 graduates, many of whom stay in town. I've never bought the beach excuse. SDSU football games are played in the evening, and in any event, who goes to the beach in October, November or December?

In a town full of people "trying" to be cool versus just being...is it any surprise not a single program (Men's BB, Aztec FB, Charger FB, Padres) don't get proper support until they are already winning?
I'll put it this way, does a garden grow before, or after, you water it?
Lot's of observers in SD, few fans.

Sorry, but the competitive disadvantage, from which we, and Rocky, suffer is...well, Rocky. Or a city of people who think just like you MOW. Observers who wait for any opportunity to bash the program and distract from our collective goal of moving forward and up. So funny to see many here languish about the last 30 years of the FB program without being able to easily realize the reason the program went no where for so long. You don't go a generation with no success on accident.

My aim is, and will continue to be--until dramatic changes occur--directed at the desperately incapable, and disinterested people squandering the opportunities. Hell, I don't even bash you, or your brethren taking communion at the Low Expectations Retreat.

Like a cancer that won't be killed and has nothing of value to contribute, which only consumes good (the recent uptrend in Aztec athletics across the board), and spits out more poison (The idea that we are not headed in the right direction), your mentality lies at the center of the dead mass that could be interested and invested fans. Now think of something witty to say in retort and keep pretending you aren't A. P. E.
